Hi everyone! Does anyone know how colleges look at TOEFL test results? I know each college has a minumum score requirement for them to read an application. But do colleges look at these scores as they do SAT tests (comparing scores between applicants) or do they regard them as more of a pass/fail test for English proficiency?

i think its a more pass/fail thing

if you score 600 on the CR part on the SAT, you are exempt from the toefl for brown. it is 670 for cornell. check the exemption levels for each school you apply to. You might net even need to worry about TOEFL the :)

Thanks so much for the replies! My friend just got her scores back from the TOEFL. Her scores cleared the requirements for all the colleges she is applying to, but were still a bit lower than she had hoped for, so she was a bit upset. We still have to wait and see how her ACT scores turned out. Thanks again!

even though most colleges have an exemption, i still feel you should take the toefl test.
and its a pass/fail test for english profiency..
just like callthecops2 said, if u get 600 or above in SAT verbal u are exempt. but u should clear that out with the colleges...

Thanks, vidushi- I think you are right. If the TOEFL is pass/fail, it is probably in her best interest anyway, since I am not sure how well she did on her standardized testing.

ur most welcome shellzie

I didnt take the toefl and got an exemption based on my critereons at abt 14 universities including all ivy league ones ..

Toefl is nothing beyond a cuttoff score.. Once you pass that score, there is nothing else that the score does to help you..and well it really doesnt mattter..

however if u are like below 600 on sat CR then u have to take the Toefl at many places despite all exemptions..

Though well .. Once u touch 600 CR and have the basics , dont wory and demand and exemptions from universities..

Yet satCR is one open factor for waiving toefl , there are other waiveoff factors too.. like medium of instruction at HIgh school.. Your language at Home.,, country's common language of communication, your english proficiency otherwise..

All this combined may result in a waiver too... and well in the end its upto u to decide..
