Wow! Alaska just won its very first Olympic swimming medal… and it is gold! 
NBC says there is only one 50 m swim pool in the entire state.

That was my favorite race if the games so far, and to think she trains in a 25 yard pool! I’m looking forward to the new mixed medley relay, it will be interesting to see the strategies of the teams.

He’s quite amazed at what’s been going on TBH. NZ, esp, with their early start that they apparently didn’t realize. I’m sure they’ll be bummed.
I just read that Simone Biles is not going to be able to continue to compete.

I feel so bad for her. Mental health is health, so whether this is a physical injury or ptsd (as I’ve read) I am just gutted for her. She deserved to go out on a high note.

I’m sorry to hear that, but she’s clearly not at her best right now.
From what I’ve heard/read, Biles is/was out of the team competition, which Team USA got the Silver medal, but not the various individual competitions. Those are still to come.

Sounds like Simone wasn’t in the right space for competition. I am gutted for her. I understand her pulling out because of injury concerns. This is her life and my heart goes out.
And to Simone and Naomi Osaka, thanks for speaking out about your mental health

Been enjoying watching the games so far. Lydia Jacoby was so surprised to see her name in the gold medal spot and the reaction from her HS was priceless. Lily King was so very gracious in defeat, as was Ryan Murphy in men’s backstroke. The endless hype is frustrating - and the idea that these athletes should be crushed by losing by less than 0.5 seconds in their race.
So disappointed for Biles. Hope she can get her groove back for the all-around. She is still the GOAT. I think the extra year was especially tough on her, and probably many others.
Also sorry to see Osaka out so soon.

This. Hype can be crushing. The teenagers and the “underdogs” who miraculously win do not feel this sort of pressure and are just enjoying the competition.

I’m only watching the tennis. Osaka lost last night. She looked unmotivated to me. Odd.
It was reported that Biles was seen with a leg heavily wrapped–sounds like there is something physical, not just her mental state is at play.
Ironic to be posted on this site given many of the ongoing/recurring discussions here.
what? How is it ironic? It is somewhat frustrating. I don’t think a bronze or silver medal is loosing at all. It’s a great achievement!
