I was too ambitious. I barely passed the AP Calc Exam (got a 3) and I jumped right into Calc II. On top of that I took General Chem I. Now I am paying for it. I'm probably going to get a 2.0 or lower in both of those classes. I wanted to try to get into Engineering but not anymore. Now I want to switch to Economics (BA) and I feel that I have wasted a full quarter because neither Chem I or Calc II or my third class (Intro to Psych) are prerequisites needed to get into the Econ Department AND my GPA is gonna be terrible so I might not get into the Econ Department. (average prereq GPA is 3.57, cumulative is 3.45). Only good news is that I'm gonna get a 3.5-3.9 in Psych... What now?

A lot of people do this, so don’t worry. They major in something that isn’t right for them and tank. If you improve your record from here on out, it shouldn’t damage your graduate school chances or anything if you’re worried about that.

In the meantime, don’t think of this as a waste of time, think of it is a learning experience. Now you know you don’t want to do engineering, right? Finish your classes this semester and try to do the absolute best you can - pull off at least a C. I’m guessing that at your school, like most, a major in economics takes 40 semester hours (which is about 10-14 classes depending on how many credits they’re worth). They’re designed to be completed mostly in 2-3 years’ time. Take your prerequisite classes next year, along with (if there’s room) the intro to economics for majors class to be sure that you like it.

Also, I second the advice to speak with an advisor - but also see if you can bend the ear of someone in the economics department. I missed out on a great opportunity in college because I was talking to someone in the sociology department (my advisor) about a program handled in the Japanese department. Of course he didn’t know when their courses were offered. Find out who your economics advisor would be if you were already majoring, and go during his or her office hours to ask. You might also email them and make an appointment.
