Too good to get in?

I've heard stories of students who apply to schools but they are rejected because the admissions department feels that they are just using the school for a safety.

I noticed that ECU's standards were lower than elite institutions and I fear that when I apply there next year, I may be rejected.

As of Junior year: (Expect continued or higher numbers)

4.13 GPA (3.68 unweighted, I think.)
1 AP.
8 Honors classes.
1770 on SAT (Will go up- that was mid-sophomore year)
28 on SAT.
5 on AP US History Exam.

Junior year: 2 More APs, 3 more honors classes.
Senior year: 2-3 more APs.

I am in Marching/Pep bands, I have received a good character award, I am an officer in 2 clubs, and have worked in a political campaign.

A couple of people told me that I was too good for ECU, but I love it. I love the campus, I love the school spirit, and I love the people. I have visited several times, and East Carolina is tied for my top school. My brother currently attends the school, and is a member of the Honors College. I would be interested in the Honors college, and I would love to study communications and/or political science.

Would I get in?

Yes, I believe you would get in. ECU is raising their admission standards more each year. Applying to the Honors College would be a great idea. Maryland is well represented at ECU.

Thanks for your reply!

My brother is currently enrolled, and last year my school sent 3 or 4 students down. It has a nice mix of people from what i’ve seen.

We live in NC. Son is an ECU student. His roommate for the last two years is fr. MD.
There are also a lot of kids from VA and NJ. Apply early. Good Luck.

ECU is OK at best. Its definately NOT an “academically amazing” school. Sorry Pirate fans but you know its true…
It seems to be a great school for people who didn’t get their first, second or third choice schools . The part about raising their admissions standards is a stretch at best - some of the most average students in my class got in - some after May 1st to their “emerging program” ( PROBATION ). Most people get in eventually unless they had terrible grades in high school. A good friend of mine (in emerging program) could barely write an essay in high school and suddenly he’s A material at ECU ! WHAT A LAUGH ! Oh, and he was told 43% of first year freshman taking College Algebra FAIL ! One of his classes is “reading skills.” Does this sound like college material ? Of course it doesn’t.
I would ask tough questions - what is the 1st year retention rate ? What percentage of first semester and second semester students are on academic probation ? ECU likes to dance around these questions because they are sooooo busy infiltrating their “updating our standards” stories. UNC - Wilmington took away a lot of their steam - but that’s for another thread… another day…
Knowledge is power. You owe it to yourself to research ECU and any other school you are considering applying/attending.
Good Luck !

Hey, nobody likes a ■■■■■. I like the school, i’ve read a lot about it, i’ve visited many times. My brother is enrolled. I love it. Get lost.

Actually, I have multiple ECU grads in my family and I’m well versed on the school. The campus is beautiful. I’m sure a lot of the people are good people. You gotta love “Pirate Nation” football… but the academics… welll…

All I’m saying is for everybody to DO YOUR THEIR OWN RESEARCH before enrolling at ECU. Ask the difficult questions & don’t let somebody in admissions dance around the answers !
Also, don’t be fooled by their propaganda !

I’m not kidding when I say almost EVERYBODY with a pulse will eventually get accepted at ECU.

That’s fine if that’s what a person wants… as long as they know the facts !
Good luck everybody !

Sundrop, what do you mean, eventually “everyone will get accepted”? does ECU not reject anyone? Is everyone is either accepted or waitlisted, then accepted off the wait list? And if so, how would you know that?

According to U.S. News latest rankings, ECU was ranked 194 among national universities and reported a 69.5% acceptance rate for Fall 2010.

I have a weighted GPA of 3.46 (I know they do not take this into consideration), an unweighted GPA of 2.83. SAT SCORES: Reading 500, Math 400, Writing 420. I am graduating from an early college in December (next month) with an AA degree along with my high school diploma. I applied for the Spring semester but was rejected (maybe they accept more transfer students than freshmen in the Spring?). I was very upset (and still am) because ECU is my top school. I am now applying for the Fall hoping to get accepted. I thought graduating from an early college would give me an advantage. Do I have any chance at all of getting accepted for the Fall 2012?

prunkss…I am a current student in the Honors College as well (I probably know your brother) and I am also an EC Scholar and from what I can tell, you would be a great candidate for both the Honors College and the EC Scholars Award. You will 100% not be turned down for being “too good.” If you love ECU- go there! Don’t let anyone try to stop you because I almost let people talk me out of it and I am so glad I didn’t. Being in the Honors College (especially EC Scholars) is no joke I might add. I have an Honors class right now that I am writing a 15 page research paper for. It definitely is more work that people might think. Some students at ECU skate by, yes. But there are definitely some students (even those of your caliber) that work a lot and struggle to make A’s and B’s. It is all in what classes you take and what opportunities you take advantage of. It doesn’t matter what the acceptance rate is, it matters what you are looking for in a college experience, and I feel like I am much happier at ECU than I would have been at, say, NC State or UNC Chapel Hill (which I was accepted to but turned down for ECU and the new Honors College). To the people who think ECU is easy…please write my research paper, read my novel, and take my two calculus quizzes for me all in four days and then tell me how easy it is. 99% of the time, the people who say ECU is easy and knock its reputation are people who are not students there, so how would they know anyway? I say if you feel like you love ECU, go there. You won’t regret it. Go Pirates!

Yes, I agree. You should apply I don’t think you will be rejecting for “being too good.” Arguably, the schools that will reject “too good” applicants are top-tier colleges (top 30) that care deeply about their yield to improve their rank. Apply.

mrshert - what do I mean by eventually everybody will be accepted… first let me make a correction… NEARLY everybody will eventually be accepted. Even ECU has some standards…

My point is ECU will accept students they initially denied… to fill slots. My daughter had classmates who heard they were accepted in late May. They were “stinky” students in HS and even my daughter was shocked they got admitted.

I’ve read on other boards the majority of their students belong at community colleges… and I think that is a fair comment !

Everybody considering ECU should ask key questions… such as…

What % of your freshman flunk out the first year ?
What % of your students are on academic probation ?
What is the ratio of accepted students vs. enrolled ? A lot of people apply to ECU as their safety school.
What percentage of freshman flunk college algebra ?
Tell me about your Emerging program.

ECU may be raising their admissions standards… but how many do they actually ENROLL !

sundrop, you’re replying to a post that is 3 months old! We get it. You don’t think much of ECU or it’s students/alumni…“stinky students”…nice,…very adult. By the tone of your posts I was assuming you were a student until I saw mention of your daughter. You’ve made your point/opinion quite clear. Your comments are meanspirited and hurtful. Could you please just give it a rest. I’m sure you can easily find another school to tear down.
