Too late for TAP?

I'm finishing up my first year at SMC and will be applying for UCLA (comm major) in November. I was living under a rock the whole year and didn't know what TAP is until now. I assume I can't enter the program and start taking honors courses next year, right?

It depends on your college.

I know UCLA requires a student to complete 22.5 units of honors (2 seminars included) by the Spring they transfer. However, the TAP at your college may limit its applicants by mandating the student to complete HALF of the 22.5 honor units by the FALL before they transfer. You have to check the honors site for your college for this info.

If your school doesn’t mandate – then good, you have plenty of time. If your school does mandate – then you need to stack up on honor courses come Fall because honor courses are not offered in the summer time.

For example at Foothill: “In order to be eligible for this program, honors students must complete a minimum of 11.5 honors units by the end of the fall term prior to their transfer. Students must successfully complete (grade of B or better) a minimum of 7 honors courses (22.5 quarter units) with a minimum GPA of 3.3 by the end of the spring term prior to their transfer.”

If TAP is not offered at your current college, then I suggest you check out your nearby colleges. I originally attended De Anza (~20 minutes from my home) but transferred to Foothill (~40 minutes from my home) to be eligible for TAP.

IT WAS TOTALLY WORTH IT.
