I didn't really know too much about National Achievement and the scholarships I could get until more recently and by that time I had already passed the deadline for the Alabama scholarship. Does anyone know if I could still try for it? or is it too late? I've seen on other threads that people have applied after and still have got it so yeah. Does anyone know??

You can always take a gap year. Spend the year working full time, while you apply for the following academic year. In addition to the scholarship, you will also have the chance to save a good bit of money as well.

Yes…You CAN get still get the NA scholarship. It’s not too late.

The Dec 1 deadline doesn’t apply to NMF or NA Finalists. :)

I need to clarify RML’s answer. It would NOT be a good idea to take a gap year. NMF and NA scholarships are not awarded for gap years.

Bumping.

NA finalists and NM Finalists can still apply and get the Alabama NMF scholarship. The Dec 1 deadline does NOT apply to Finalists. You can apply during these months up to about May 1st.

4 years tuition (including OOS)
1 year of housing (including the honors super suites)
$2k study abroad money
$1k per year stipend
iPad (whatever the latest one is - this last year, the students also got the bluetooth keyboard - not sure if the keyboard is assured).

total value: over $100k.

The tuition scholarship does increase in value as tuition rises. :)

M2CK - a question for you (since I know you’re very knowledgeable about UAlabama).

Now that UA isn’t offering a “full ride” anymore, why do you think students are still picking it? I know that UA has the highest # of NMFs this year even with the scholarship cuts - what’s the reason for picking it over other schools of the same caliber (ex. Barrett @ ASU or UA @ B) that offer full rides?

I would think that the approximate 20k or so - over three years - for housing is enough to turn students away. Any reasons? As a NMF, I’m still searching for good schools financially, and UA doesn’t have the same appeal (to me) as it did when it offered a full ride. Thoughts?

I am not M2CK, but her knowledge and posts in CC served as the original impetus to us considering The University of Alabama.

I have always held the opinion that a student should attend the best school possible FOR THEIR MAJOR. BAMA is top-notch in my DD’s major.

In the BAMA forums, you often see the phrase “the visit seals the deal.” It really does. The campus, the people, the athletics, the SEC Spirit, the Southern Charm and many other factors combine to make the school almost an enchanted place.

If it is a “fit” for you, then I believe UA can make your college experience better than your dreams.

You should visit. Failing that, look at the virtual tour on the UA website.

Oh, and that “other” phrase you might see on CC…

ROLL TIDE!!!

Those schools do not offer full rides.

Arizona State gives just tuition.

UAB gives housing also, but not a full ride, and it’s not the same caliber as Alabama, although maybe a better choice in a few select majors.

Also, we don’t officially know if students are going to keep picking it after the scholarship cuts. The class of 2013 is the first class to be faced with the reduced (albeit, still generous) scholarship and the numbers for that class haven’t come out yet. I suspect we’ll see a decline in number of NMS that go to Alabama next year, but I think it’ll still be the number one public school by a decent margin.
