When's it too late to take the GRE? The ETS website suggests it takes them two weeks to send the results to each department, and some departments have a deadline of Dec 1st. Does that mean I need to take it this weekend, on the 16th?

I'm not ready for it. I haven't really studied for it. Do I really have to wait another year so I can study properly and be ready?

It depends on the program you’re aiming for. Some programs (usually Masters) have a deadline of March 15. Most are in December. For the deadlines in December, yes it will be too late to take the GRE, as the latest recommended one is the October administration. This is not taking into account the time it takes to prepare for the test, but how long it takes for the ETS to release official results.

Wait. If it takes them two weeks to send my results, why couldn’t I take it this weekend? I am thinking of cramming for the next few days and then taking it. But should I just give up?

I would first check and make sure there are seats even available within the week. Last I checked, and this was back in mid October, seats were filled up through mid-late November.

Also, if you took it this weekend and the schools you’re looking at require a December 1st deadline, I’d say it’s too late. However, SOME places will still accept some materials later than that. And SOME places will still accept applications but it’ll be more difficult to find funding. Again, those are some places. At least one place I’m looking with a December 1st deadline said they’d still accept some parts of the application (transcripts or scores) past the deadline.

Overall, though, I’d advise not cramming and then winging it. Some people can do that and still do very well, but with regards to deadlines and everything, this is really pushing it too close for comfort.

It does NOT take them 2 weeks to mail your results. I took the October GRE and the results won’t get mailed out until just about 2 weeks from now.

I second Elocin’s advice. In addition, if you’re looking to apply for this season’s admission cycle, there’s a lot more to applications than taking the GRE. There’s also LORs and SOPs. This is quite a time investment. Winging it doesn’t exactly work out well in the grand scheme of the process.

My impression is that not many schools are good with the late submissions of materials. I’m pretty sure that they have enough applicants to choose from who are not late.

(Sorry if I sound a little blunt … a little stressed … )
