whoaaaa crazy!

Dina Dee, The answer to the question you posed in your opening, is Yes. My own daughter also took 8th gr. Alg. That was her "first year of H.S. mathematics." She then took 3 yrs math in h.s. & had very successfull college admissions results. However, (1) she's not a math concentrator or major, (2) Her 3 add'l math courses were all Honors & AP's (incl Calc), and (3) She had a ton of 'extras' (challenges, advanced courses) in her non-math courses over the 4 yrs + summers. She skipped the "5th" yr. of math so that she could take the really challenging other courses her h.s. offered. Those were areas of her intended acad. interest in college.

Also, the math was the only area for which she did the bare minimum. All the other subject areas (incl. science) she far exceeded minimums.

I think all colleges take these kinds of h.s. choices into account. (Do what you love.)
