Took practice SAT for the first time with zero prep, got a 1460 out of 1600. What does this mean?

A little background on me: I’m a rising junior and I plan on taking the SAT in the spring of next year (2017, that is). I took the PSAT as a sophomore with no prep and I got a 1380, and I plan to take it again (this time for NMS) this fall. While NMS is great, I’m more worried about the SAT since that actually counts for college admissions. So I started my prep today by taking a practice test on the College Board’s website (practice test 1, to be exact). I ended up with a 710 on the Reading/Writing and a 750 on the math. I have awful EC’s (a summer job, one club, and that’s about it), so I’m looking to use my scores/academics as a crutch to get me admitted to a not-terrible school. So exactly how good is a 1460, both objectively and in the context of my situation? Obviously I have a few months ahead of me to prepare in, so about how much do you think I can improve if I work hard enough? I’m not looking for a perfect 1600 but I’m shooting for somewhere in the 1500s.

It means you’re already pretty good at the SAT. You should figure out where your weakness(es) lie and attack them–a 1550+ score is probably a reasonable short-term goal. Well done, @myscreenname568

What kind of schools are you considering?

Will money play into the decision? Do you need to hunt for merit?

I’d say you’re going great. I got a 1440 on my first practice test, and ended up with 1580 on the actual test… Realize your weaknesses , and work on them. Also, try and fit in regular practice till your test day.
