I took US History in junior year. Is that possible to self study AP US History in senior year and take the AP exam?

us history is a joke compared to ap us history. i mean apush is really just all about reading, it was literally one of the only classes where i read the text book cover to cover, so yes i guess you could self study it. but the class is nice in the fact that it gives you the chance to review everything/gives you accountability

I would advise against it. there is so much information to learn in APUSH.

And AP US History is interesting. I never realized how many jokes I missed on Family Guy, South Park, and in the movies prior to taking APUSH.

well depends on how hard your US class was. I had some friends in honors US and they covered what we did second semester in the same depth and breath just in double the time we did.

I would also argue against that proposal. APUSH is probably much harder and more rigorous than USH.

Isn’t the DBQ and FRQ portion graded rather rather harshly?

^yup, average score is usually around 3/9 on each. Last year’s republican party FRQ averaged just over 1.5/9.

Wow, there’s a lot of negative advice here.

Honestly, I think that if you set realistic but high goals for yourself, you will be fine if you self-study. If you can find some way to assess your knowledge every few weeks or so, then I say go for it. If you have a textbook and a good memory, you don’t need anything else.

However, if you’re not a history-oriented person, then I would advise you to think about this long and hard. Learning US History is no small task. If you do self-study, make sure to break each time period down into its major themes; this makes it a lot easier for you to memorize trends, names, and important dates.

what is the good AP U.S. History textbook?

The American Pageant is a good textbook with great amount of information, but almost half of the book is filled with useless biographical information and annoying metaphors.

Prep books I would recommend are AMSCO and REA Crash Course.

Besides, self-studying APUSH is certainly feasible, and many CCers on this forum have done this before and achieved 5’s.

Normal US history doesn’t cover the material anywhere nearly as in-depth as AP does. That being said, I think it’s entirely possible to self study. I know a lot of people who have had success with the AMSCO book.

My friend this year took Honors US History and got a 4 on the APUSH exam. I think it all depends on the level of your class. Those are my 2 cents.

American Pagent is a great book, and is filled with so many one liners. My teacher even underlined them in his copy. But like others have said, APUSH is a LOT of work.

You should also take into consideration of what other classes you’re taking. APUSH is a lot of reading and memorization. So if you’re taking AP Euro or AP Bio i would advise against self studying APUSH.
I like getting straight through the point, so AMSCO was really good for me. But the American Pageant was a nightmare! It made you read more than needed; it had so many unnecessary info and corny jokes! But at least it made the reading somewhat more enjoyable.

just read a textbook you should be fine its not hard. history is just understanding and memorization and there is tons of resources online

A friend of mine self-studied last year (2009 exam) and got a 3. She didn’t put a whole lot of effort in though, so I’d say it’s doable if you’re highly motivated.

American Pageant is a good textbook, but every time it made a reference to a president’s height or appearance I just wanted to throw it out the window!

Thanks for all the info!!
The reason that I am thinking to take APUSH exam is I did not realize that I was good at memorizing. I hope to waive this course when I am in college.
