research, research, research. These rankings heavily emphasize research institutions and completely ignore the LACs. Highly ranked USNWR Universities which emphasize undergraduate education such as Dartmouth, Brown, Boston College, Georgetown did not fare very well either.

On the other hand it's good to see Imperial and some of the other European and Asian universities get some recognition. Study abroad anyone?

^ By that logic, there is no way UC Berkeley, Northwestern and UCLA are below Brown. All three schools are far more heavily involved in scientific research and engineering than Brown. You might argue that Brown might do more research in the social sciences and humanities but that, then, would contradict how low Georgetown is ranked considering how much stronger of a school it is in the social sciences than Brown. Plus, Princeton too highly emphasizes undergraduate education and only has a handful of graduate programs available for that reason. It's still ranked 12th.

These rankings are wack. It is also just baffling to see how Michigan is so far ahead (and even UCLA) of Berkeley when they are essentially the same type of schools, research oriented public schools, with Berkeley leading in most areas. The placing of Brown is also just confusing as well; schools like JHU and CMU, I could see why they would rank high given their forefront programs in specifically medicine and computer science respectively, and then there are the schools like Cornell and Northwestern that have rigorous engineering/science programs + research oriented med schools that would place them relatively high on research value, but Brown has no such programs and is relatively weak in most research oriented sciences + a very mediocre med school.

I don't see the logic.

Berkeley lacks the health science disciplines. That could explain the difference. Who knows?

PENN!

omg i want to go to penn so badly.....chances r small but i love that school

THES's rankings fluctuate wildly every year. They are also biased towards Common Wealth universities.

PtonGrad, a very consistent poster on the Princeton forum, was able to show how the data for the rankings are subject to institutional interpretation. Princeton, in particular, is hurt by its interpretation of the staff/student data.

Doesn't PtonGrad have anything better to do?

Spoiler Alert: No

How the **** does Berkeley only get a 24 in the "Staff/Student score" while fUCLA manages a 48?!

@ ilovebagels.

I don't see the point of many of your posts other than to bash Princeton. PtonGrad revealed useful information, let him be. Furthermore, you have posted a lot more on this forum than he has. With your logic, you must have nothing better to do too.

University of Arizona? ***? You mean to tell me that they actually think UofA is better than Notre Dame?

World's most highly regarded top 100 rankings.

LOL barrons. I know why you love this rating. ;-)

It just goes to show that most internationals are math and science research nerds.

I'd like to know how CU Boulder is on there and not University of Denver or even Colorado State. DU is a MUCH better school. What the crap?

Actually ring of fire, it goes to show how research in the sciences and engineering is very important and valued on a global level. New findings in the influenza virus and development of nanoscale complex ions that will attach to the DNA sequence of tumors and inhibit the growth are valued more than "research" in the social consequences of people drinking more coffee. It's a hard truth to swallow for many.

BS! what about Notre Dame? freaking anti-Catholic world...these rankings are rediculous in more ways than one, and i seriously question anyone who takes it for more worth than a grain of salt. a very small, ground-up grain of salt

ND is trying to become a great research university. Notice I mentioned the word "trying." A great undergraduate school is not necessarily a great graduate school. The best universities of this world are great research/graduate schools and are ranked accordingly.

Notre Dame is an exceptional and excellent school for an undergraduate college experience, but it is by no means a large-scale research university that would receive international recognition. They have very few quality graduate programs in the hard sciences nor a medical school that usually contributes a lot in a university's research. It's not a shocker that they aren't on there.

This ranking can't be taken seriously! It is downright ridiculous...

NOTE, somehow UK schools take up of 4 of the top 7???? That is a surprise!
