We're talking undergraduate, of course, right?

now i love cornell, but by no means is it above penn, the day that happens... eek

Cujoe, Cornell is generally ranked ahead of Penn in most disciplines (including Biology, Chemistry, Computer Science, English, Geology, History, Mathematics, Physics, Political Science and in Engineering). Furthermore, Cornell has top undergraduate programs in Agriculture, Architecture, Hotel Management and Industrial and Labor Relations. The only undergraduate fields in which Penn is regarded better than Cornell are Business and Economics. I am not saying that Cornell is definitely better than Penn, but it is certainly more versatile.

You forgot Rice, flopsy!

I would definetely argue Duke and Penns position on that one.

On flopsy's list, I think Caltech should be ranked above Berkeley, since we're talking undergraduate schools here. And if UT-Austin's on the list, UW-Madison, another good state school, should also be on the list, probably above UT. I'm also surprised by the absence of any LACs on the list!

berkeley should be ranked much lower, there are at least 10 people in my class who are going there next year who would not (and were not) acceptd to ANY other schools on that list. They are not intellectuals, not great students, and never stood out as particularly active or whatnot at my school. Obviously, if you are out of state, you need to be much, much better than these people. So i see how their competetiveness of admissions makes them look like a great place. Its also a good degree to have, and offers very challenging courses. but in terms of student body, it is only marginally better than that of the caliber of say, a UC Riverside.
Now, of course its graduate programs and research productivity, and football team are still good enough to rank it in the top 10 Universities of the world. But as far as colleges go, its not up there.

Add Amherst and take off Penn State. Also, UIUC is much better than UCSD. I think you're a bit biased for UC schools.

Eh..I wouldn't say Berkeley's student body is only marginally better than that of UCR. Maybe the people you know that got in, got in as a fluke? At least in my school, those that you'd think would get in to Berkeley got in; and those who you'd think wouldn't, didn't. Actually, I'd say there's a huge difference b/w UCR and Cal's student body.

Also, add Wellesley and take off UCSD. I admit UC San Diego is a good school, but not THAT good. U Notre Dame is also a school I believe should be in the Top 30.

flopsy's list is horrible.

different strokes for different folks
