Top 50,000 PSAT Scorers

I am confused. The letter I got from NMSC for my high PSAT score says I can select to colleges. My questions is: for what? Will I get more bulk mail (as I've been getting since I've taken the PSAT)? Will they use the info to send me borchures about particular programs? Will they use the info for scholarship reasons?
Thanks to all who reply.

You will most likely be added to those schools's mailing list, and you will not recieve more mail from any other schools. Basically, the colleges you choose can help marginally in acceptance, because colleges now know that you were considered a top 2 choice.

WAIT. Can someone confirm that it will marginally help in acceptance? What top top colleges care about expressed interest?

No school.

Once you get further into the NMS process, you will get more bulk mail then you could ever read. NMS semi, finalists, or awarded students regularly complain to me about how much crap they get from colleges. So get used to it!!

WashU states demonstrated interest as a factor in admissions

DS was just notified of NM commended and has never gotten much mail, at least not yet. It's probably too late for schools to get his attention now. He focused in on about 7 schools.

DD, HS frosh, filled out one response in a college magazine is getting enough mail to give the letter carrier a hernia. I kept a rough tab on the total postage and stopped counting when it passed $30. It's probably close to $100 now.

Will these two schools be the ones that are considered our "top choices" or whatever? So shouldn't we pick ones that give money to NM Finalists, since you only get money from a school if it is your top choices. And about that, is only one of the schools we pick the top choice or are both of them?

I think its a good idea to pick schools that give money to finalists -- that means they care whether you go there or not (but they aren't the top top colleges). HYPS get so many finalists that it won't make a difference to them. You can change your top choice school after you have decided where you will go -- as late as May.

The one you put first is the only one who will give you money. I would wait until you are sure what school you want to attend before you put a school down. I believe you have several months (after NMSF is announced) before you have to designate a school. It is also your responsibility to apply and be accepted to the college you want a scholarship from.

this preliminary 50,000 top scorers notification thing doesn't seem like a big deal to me. only a fraction of these will move on to become finalists.

When did people get letters? We haven't gotten one, and S scored in the 99%. Did letters come home or to school?

I had a 218 on the test, live in new york. I understand the cutoff for commended was 204 or something. Why have I not even recieved anything for this?!?!

Check with your HS -- DS got his letter in the mail yesterday. It had our home address, return address was NM Corp., and then the HS stamped its return address on the envelope. The postage was local, also suggesting it was part of a larger packet of letters that had been sent directly to the HS.

Clearly, the HS got the letters and then forwarded them on to the students.
