UCs have 6 out of the first 13 spots.

It's also six times larger than the average state.

UCB

Michigan, Virginia

UCLA

UNC

William and Mary

Wisconsin

UCSD

UIUC

Georgia Tech

UCD

UCI

UCSB

Texas, Washington

I agree, they have the UC system, and NY is the only one with a similar system (SUNY). And cali outnumbers almost all other states both in size of state and #of colleges

I remember when the SUNY system was credible, before Albany became the number 1 party school in the nation.

Personally, it seems like Texas gets sort of shafted by that ranking. UCD, UCI, and UCSB all ranked higher than Austin? That seems like sort of a stretch.

I think SUNY is still very respectable, but not as it was of old

"Personally, it seems like Texas gets sort of shafted by that ranking. UCD, UCI, and UCSB all ranked higher than Austin? That seems like sort of a stretch."

this is also true for USNWR's overall rankings... so just because they've taken out all the private schools and we're left with the publics doesnt mean anything has changed. so i dont know whats the big shock cuz ppl havent been complaining about texas being underrated or UCSB being overrated. (perhaps bcuz texas is a big flagship state school so ppl might be shocked that its ranked lower that some other UCs?)

but ohnoes, what are your reasons for why UT Austin should be higher?

I hate all ratings...they're all stupid

It's simply known more for acedemics. Austin has many good graduate schools, and Texas undergrads are usually held in the same regard as other mid-upper state schools (UNC, UVA, UW, etc.). UCSB, by contrast, is almost unknown to anybody outside California, and its students would generally be of a lower caliber than Texas's. While it's a good school, I just can't see how it's placed above Texas - it just happens to be boosted by the fact that it's a UC, and they probably reject a good amount of students who go on to Berkeley, UCSD, or UCLA because it will obviously be seen as a safety for strong applicants.

I agree that Texas clearly deserves a higher rank than all the UCs except UCB. Absolutely no comparison. The business school alone gets them there.

Even UCLA?

texas is a great school, but when you hear people talking about school quality it usually isn't up to par with ucla, ucb, and ucsd. i could see an argument for sb, davis, and irvine, but they have really awesome graduate schools as well.

ucsb's science programs are among the best in the world- i personally think it's an underrated school, better than irvine, just deterred by the fact that it's known as a party school.

Texans don't get so upset, its only an impartial ranking done by a prestigious news/research organization. Barrons is right, we only have the best schools because we have six times as many smart students as anyplace else (LOL - I might have extended the logical progression of his actual thought)

Honestly folks it is just a list and you don't have to agree with it.

It probably considered looks. Thats the ticket.

UVM should be rated higher than it is.

texans have way too much pride. lol. i agree ut austin should be higher but not that high. probably tied with UCSD. austin and ucla are incomparable. =D

No, I think all of the UC's are in the right place. "The middlemen" (SB, I, and Davis) are all excellent schools with top ranked programs. I would say that the most underrated one would be UCSD, it deserves to top wisconsin

Texas has very good Business school ( #5 over all, Accounting #1), Engineering school, Law school, and Medical school, I don't think it should be under UCLA.

USCD should not top Wisconsin, as it does not offer as wide a spectrum of top-ranked programs. While Wisconsin has a few programs in the top 10, and many more in the top 25, most of USCD's top programs are concerned with biological sciences and have a much more narrow scope, although those few programs are some of the best.
