Top Music Schools Ranking in 2010

Anyone care to comment on the rankings posted on this website -- UScollegeranking.org? I was surprised to not see Ithaca College listed in the top 30.

That ranking is in line with previous rankings. IU, Rochester, Michigan, Northwestern, Oberlin, JHU and Rice all have top rated Music Performance programs within elite universities.

The concept of trying to rank music schools is discussed several times in the Music Major Forum. Here’s a link to a thread, which then has links to other threads. The basic consensus is that attempts to rank music schools is helpful for providing a beginning list of schools to explore, but not in terms of the ranking per se.

IMO the most important aspect of studying music is the quality of the private instruction that the student receives on his instrument. I would work to find schools with excellent private teachers rather than those that are on some list. I would also rather see students stay away from conservatories for their undergraduate education in music. Most of the large conservatories put their resources into the grad programs.

Another thing to consider with music programs is the likelihood of being able to compete for performance opportunities as an undergraduate. Sometimes it is better to go to a “lesser” school and be on the top of the heap with respect to performance opportunities than to go to a name school only to find out that only graduate students ever get any performance opportunities.

Good luck!

Thanks for the link about music schools. I’ve been trying to figure out what IMO means… could someone enlighten me? I feel stupid!

In My Opinion (IMO)

^^^Sometimes expanded to IMHO. The H stands for Humble. Supposedly.

What it REALLY means is “I’m right, and anyone who doesn’t agree is an idiot.”

and IMHO really means “I’m absolutely right, and anyone who doesn’t agree is the biggest idiot.”
