Top Theatre Schools, anyone?

There really isn't a worthwhile ranking system for drama schools, so it's pretty tough to weed out the best. I would love for someone (anyone) to point out the best-known or highest-quality programs for a BA in theatre (not a BFA).

Thanks so much! :D

Switch over to the Arts Majors forum and you'll find thread on Drama/Acting. Read it from start to finish and I think you'll have a good idea of the well respected programs. Also, some ideas on how to evaluate programs for yourself.

This is the Musical Theater forum and mostly focused on BFA programs. There's lots of activity here, but I think what you'll need is probably on the other thread.

thank you so much!

OK, I'll bite.

The poster is looking for BA's, not BFA's. Aren't most of the schools you listed pre-professional programs offering BFA's?

If you search this forum, you likely will come up with posts that have listed various strong BA programs in Drama/Theater. It is hard to even come up with a list without knowing the kind of student you are or if you prefer a major university or a small/medium sized college.

Some you may wish to check out are:

Brown
Yale
Vassar
Northwestern
Middlebury
UCLA
Cornell
Emory
Bennington
Connecticut College
Kenyon College
Lawrence University
Macalester College
Princeton
Rollins College
Sarah Lawrence College
Skidmore College
Whitman College
Indiana University
UNC-Chapel Hill
Cal State Fullerton
U of Alabama
Arizona State
U of Nebraska
UC, Irvine
Fordham
College of Charleston
Brandeis University
Boston College
UCLA
Catholic University

Mary Anna...on your BFA list, might you consider adding Boston University or SUNY Purchase?

~~Susan

Well, let's see.

USC offers a BA in theatre

UCLA offers a BA in theatre

I think there is a list somewhere on this board that had already been posted. You can probably find it if you search.

Good luck,
xxx,Mary Anna

Please consider University of Minnesota-Twin Cities. Cold, yes it is!! BUT a fab campus an enxcellent opportunities to work with the Guthrie Theatre.

SUE aka 5pants

Oh yes, good idea Susan. I would add BU.
I am pretty sure their degree is a BFA, though. I guess this poster wants a BA.

good luck

Mary Anna, yes, I was saying might you add BU (and Purchase) to the BFA list you had , not for THIS student or for a BA.
Susan

wow! you guys are amazing and helpful, might i add, much more so than the engineering forum ;) thanks so much for the list!

is the fordham program respectable? i am mostly interested in directing, and am more interested in a program that has a friendly and willing student base, maybe large enough to do small student productions.

thanks so so so much for your input. <3 hol

Fordham is a great school for theatre and in just general.

I know that Denzel Washington went there (and to ACT for grad) and also, I believe, Felicity Huffman.

I don't know anything about Fordham's directing program. I do know SMU has a theatre studies undergrad degree with a concentration in dramaturgy, directing and playwriting and a terrific MFA degree in directing. But so do others

Sorry I can't be more help about Fordham.

good luck,
xxx,Mary Anna
