Torggler Summer Vocal Institute at Christopher Newport Univ. (VA)

I had posted this on the CC/Musical Theater board, buried in a thread, but thought it would be useful information for any VP majors on this board - I was “clicking around” today, and stopped by the website for Christopher Newport University’s Torggler Summer Vocal Institute. Right on the front page was:

" Ten student spaces just added! Application deadline is June 5.

The Torggler Summer Vocal Institute is a two-week residential program at Christopher Newport University in Newport News, Virginia. As a participant in the Torggler Summer Vocal Institute (TSVI) you will explore the many styles and repertoires of vocal music, connect with the finest vocal artists and teachers, and discover your talent and interests in the vocal arts.Your time at the Institute will be filled with lessons, masterclasses, workshops and performances designed to help you reach your fullest potential and to shape your future as a vocal artist. "

I couldn’t find more specific info on the website, but from past experience of looking into this program (I live very close to CNU), the program is open to high school and college students. The guests/faculty/featured artists this year are quite impressive, and if you/your child is a rising HS senior, this might be a gold-mine of a program to attend:

As a local to CNU-- This program is outstanding! I hope someone here at CC takes advantage of this. If so-- please post your experience later this summer. Happy to “pay it forward.”

Thanks for the info!

Just wondering – I noticed on the TSVI website it says they require a musical theater and a classical piece. Do all participants of TSVI participate in both opera and musical theatre activities or do you get to choose your focus? (i.e. I am interested in opera but not musical theatre, would I have to participate in musical theatre activities?)

Sorry-- I don’t know the answer to your question. Maybe there’s a person you can contact thru the TSVI website.

@politicalsoprano- You will find that many VP programs now will want you to have an MT piece in your audition portfolio anyway, so chances are that the musical theatre part of this program will be slanted toward the “classical MT” voice. It’s perfectly OK to call or email a program to inquire about anything you would like clarified though!

Thanks for sharing about this program SU88BFA! Sounds really neat. Wish my D wasn’t alreafy busy this summer, but definitely going to put it on her radar for nnext year
