I REALLY want to take Freakonomics for my FYWS. But I also don't want to miss out on taking an honors seminar since I am getting the opportunity to do so. I'm not specifically interested in its subject matter but I feel it's important to experience a wide range of subjects not related to your major. Is it too much if I take both? Then my credit hours will be 17. Or should I just stick to one? In which case I will have 14 credit hours.

Just remember your chances of getting into any particular non honors seminar are minimal. My advice would be to include both seminars in your registration cart and attempt to register for them both. You should get your honors one, may be shut out of the non-honors one. If you happened to get both, then you could wait until much closer to school starting to decide how many hours to take.

Your other option would be to take one in the fall and the other in the spring.

@vandyswim Can I just drop a class before August? Even though I have enrolled in it?

@SurvivorFan So can I just take an honors seminar in the spring ( without going through a separate application for it)?

Here is what it says about freshman seminars on YES:

“May be repeated for credit once if there is no duplication of topic, but students may earn only up to 3 credits in any 115F course per semester of enrollment. [3; maximum of 6 credits total for all semesters of 115F]”

For more information, ask your advisor. Yes, you can drop a class in the open registration period, which begins in late July and runs through the beginning of school.

Thank you for your responses! I will ask my advisor in a few days :)

Sophie, you can drop classes without any penalty in the first week of classes. There’s an extended drop deadline as well, requires you to get some signatures or something, but the class will never be on your transcript after dropping. No penalty.

Does YES allow you to enroll in two classes being held at the same time? In case you want to wait until AP scores are in to decide which one you want?

Sophie if you are already one of the thirty College Scholars, you do not have to “reapply” for that registration privilege re honors seminars during your Vandy years. The second 30 slots (total of 60 by spring term) are selected from from first term fall semester freshman applicants interested in the concept…they have to “apply” to enter the College Scholars program. Don’t worry about whether or not you want to accumulate enough points for the “Honors in the College of Arts and Sciences” diploma either. Things will shake out as you go along. You may accumulate honors points while fulfilling some of your core requirements, then get caught up and head off into another direction re the use of your class selection at Vandy. Explore, and enjoy.

You cannot enroll in two courses that are held at the same time. Your best bet is to try to enroll in the one you feel will be more difficult to get a spot in (usually this is going to be the one not requiring AP scores).

Thank you @Faline2 and @Pancaked ! Freakonomics is already filled up so I will just stick with the honors seminar. Life is easier when you don’t have to choose :P

If your registration date is one of the next two weeks, they will open more spots for each week.
