Torn Between Two Colleges...

Even though neither decisions are out yet, I am torn between two schools. Namely, two business programs. One is Miami University (OH) Farmer Business School and the other is Ross Business of the University of Michigan.

Obviously Ross is ranked higher, but it is very difficult to get in. I did not apply pre-admit so would have to try and be admitted as a sophomore. I don't want to go to U of M and then not get into Ross, because then I don't know what to do! A whole year gone! The Farmer Business School is ranked in the top 25 and it is four years and my stats for getting admitted as a freshman are perfect.

Cost of the programs: I'm in state for Michigan but can qualify for half to full tuition academic scholarship at Miami.

I always thought I wanted to go to U of M! My life has been revolved around that school and I never doubted it was my top choice! But that's because of Ross. Miami's cheaper cost and high chance of getting into a top 25 business school and not risking Ross are what is making me reconsider.

Opinions would be appreciated! I really like both schools when I visited, too. They are quite different in size but I could see myself at both. I love the "work hard play hard" atmosphere and night life of both schools.

How is your profile as an applicant? If you are a competitive applicant, I’d take the risk to U of M.

@viphan My stats are solid to get into U of M LSA, but I don’t know how freshman year will go to get into Ross!

Hmmm, you don’t think it’d be a worth to risk to Ross?

@viphan I honestly don’t know what a plan would be if I DIDN’T get into Ross. I could major in economics I suppose but Ross really is the gateway to so many opportunities.

What math class are you in? Did you take (or are you taking) AP Lang? What’s your class rank and your SAT score?

This would help in giving you advice - ie., whether you have a decent shot at Ross, or not.
In addition, you could email UMich, tell them they’re your first choice, and you wanted to apply for direct admit to Ross - at worst they’ll say you can’t.

Are both schools affordable?

You love Ross but didn’t apply for pre-admit there?

In any case, Ross definitely opens more avenues than Farmer.

Econ at UMich arguably opens as many doors as Farmer (but different ones).

Key question: what major would you choose in b-school?

BTW, rankings are bunk.

@MYOS1634 I took Calc last year but not the exam and I took lang and got a 5. My class rank is top 8% and ACT was 33. My parents would pay for both schools, I’m in state for UMich but also could get a scholarship to Miami.

@PurpleTitan Well originally I was going to, but I realized I had written my entire essay about LSA and not Ross. I had an essay mentor so I couldn’t really go back on it, especially because I submitted it like two days before the deadline. Looking back, I wish I had at LEAST tried, but I just assumed I wouldn’t get in.

And I want to go into finance or banking.

Then definitely try for Ross. If you had said accounting or marketing or IS, I would have recommended the safer path of Farmer.

Econ or statistics from UMich aren’t bad either.

yeah, you could do a LOT worse than econ, math, or stats at Michigan. :-q Miami. A good school, but not Michigan
