Total Shock For Bio (bad Shock)

ok, so i thought i was good at bio...i got my score 690 in Bio M...im so shocked...does this hurt my chances for duke, cornell, hopkins, u chicago, berkeley, ucla?...my other sub test scores are (710,740)...PLEASE SOMEONE ANSWER!! SADDEST DAY OF MY L I F E!!!!! :(

Someone Plz!!!

hmm...well, that depends on your major for those colleges...but generally, you might want to try to retake it if you can..push it up to 700+.

Well, first of all, according to the score report I got a couple months ago, the average percentile given for 700 on Bio M is 70, and they don't give 690. I would guess... 67-68% percentile That's good, but could also be better, given the level of scores that the schools you mentioned are probably looking for.

A 710/740 can be good or not so much, really depending on the tests you took, because of the whole percentile bit. A 740 in USH is pretty good, 90th percentile-ish. A 740 in Chinese is 20th percentile. So it really depends on what you took.

Remember that while subject test scores are considered, they play only one roll of many in the admissions process.

1 Percentiles on SAT IIs don't matter that much

2 Take a deep breath most schools that require 2 sat IIs take the 2 highest (which are very solid scores).

bump..plz.......

bump...........need answers!!!

How many did you miss? 690 seems like you could miss 20 and get that score.

you have 2 scores in the 700s. UC's only take the two best scores. You're fine.

tkd2009: The bio exam curve is harsh, especially for the June 2008 session.

I think you should prep it over the summer and re-take it again.

bump.............................................

bump!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

i have the same problem as you, except this is the first subject test i've taken.. i got a 670 on BioM, after taking manyyy practice tests and receiving 750+. i only omitted 2, and really didn't think i got that many wrong. i'm considering retaking it in fall though, and if not.. hopefully cornell won't care, as long as i do good on other subject tests next year =]

i got a 690 too! i think i am going to take it again, but as i have heard and i actually called a undergrad admissions director, 700 plus looks better

690 is not the end of the world. you can retake it. I got a 590 in Bio, still got into a top school.

kjcastillo1990:

WHAT??!! you got a 590 in bio and got into a top school? If you don't my asking, what school did you get into and what were your other scores like? I'm asking because I got a similar score on one of my subject tests

look, don't worry so much about the SAT IIs. Other parts of your applications are far more important. My D got 740, 690, and gasp, a 590 in Spanish, and got into UCB and UCLA, USC with the top scholarship, Columbia and is on the Harvard extended waitlist. It's all the other stuff that counts a lot more.

Sequoia:

Thank you for the info. It's a great relief to know that I can get a 500 something on a SAT II and still get into a good school, I was just intimidated by all the posts on here with people saying "I got 6 800s and a 780, I think I'll have to retake the 780 because that is garbage", anyway my scores are comparable to your daughter's, 790 US History, 650 Chemistry, 570 Math IIC

it's unlikely you'll get into a state school, you may want to shoot for community college

bicylekick, you're welcome. Also, SATs in general, really once you are in the 2100s, for top schools, you are competitive, as long as the other aspects of your resume are good. At Ds school for example, a very competitive one, we had students who were in the high 2300s who didn't get in to the tops, and others with 2000 or 2100+ who did, but who had great applications. There's just no guarantee with super high scores. GPA, ECs, awards, essays, etc all count for a lot more.
Best of luck.

Keep in mind though, that If one is planning on engineering or a math related field, they would look at the Math score more closely, same applies for other subjects.
