Hey guys, so advance registration is nearly over and I have signed up for all my classes and everything. However, I still desperately want to take 5 classes. I know, everyone says "take four classes so you can adjust.. blah blah blah" but whatever. My parents are paying tons for Penn and I have to take advantage as much as possible. I already talked to my advisor about this, but she said she can't do anything b/c the computer system can only let us take 4.5 classes. Can anyone tell me if it is possible for me to add a class during NSO or after advance registration? Should I talk to the advising people once I get to Penn and convince them to let me take an extra class during NSO? I don't even understand why it's so difficult to do this. If we want to take 5 classes, they should let us. I mean we're paying $50,000/year. It should be our choice!

I can’t help you, but I completely agree with you. While I’m permitted to take 5 cus in Wharton, my advisor really pushed I only take 4. We’re paying so much it’s almost only sensible to take 5 courses, especially since tuition isn’t reduced or anything if we elect to take a lighter schedule.

michelle: maybe you should speak with someone in the College. That sounds ridiculous to me. You’re right to want your money’s worth!!! Best of luck and keep trying.

Yep, speak to the representatives at the College Office. They would change your maximum course load.

they put a limit first semester so that you wont be overwhelmed at first because beginning college is a completely new experience which will bring with it a LOT of lessons which you wont be scheduling for…
relax, you have at least 7 semesters where you can take as many as you like…

I thought most people took 5 classes? Or is that only for Wharton?

There is an appeal process for taking additional classes, but that’s usually for students who want to take 6 or 7. I would also talk to a different advisor, especially if you have a good reason for wanting to take extra classes (minors, dual degrees, etc.)

Yeah I agree with bat. You should probably take time to adjust to the new environment and get used to things. You will have a lot of time to take more classes after first semester.

All schools but the College have freshman taking 5 courses. What’s best to do is sign up for your 4 smallest courses during advanced registration and go directly to the college office in person during NSO to request a 5th course. If you have a course you want to take like Econ or Psyc 1 where there are like 400 students you can easily get into the class during the add period.
