tough competition

My friend with a 4.2 gpa and 1500 on his sats was rejected from brown, cornell, tufts, amherst college, university of rochester, and a few other schools. He only got into umass amherst.

tough luck. what did he have?

i mean, his other stats?

he does boy scouts and i think track? i also think he plays the piano. My school doesn't publish class rank anymore, but as far as i know he is probably in the top 25% but more than likely not in the top 10%. My school is very competitive and is supposedly one of the best public schools in the nation. I know it is the best in the state. Last year 10 kids got into Cornell. This year so far only 1 has, but 3 kids got into MIT and 1 into Stanford.

What school is it (I'm assuming you live in Massachusetts if that kid picked Umass as a safety)?

1500 on the SAT isn't great, it probably hurt in admissions (also, GPA and Test Scores aren't everything, maybe he was boring?)

1500 isnt great?

dude, don't worry, just do your best..the college admission is not this tough that not a single college will accept you! and even if for sum wierd reason, u don't get into any of ur choices, then, well, there are still soo many more options.....this is one thing about US education that I like.

1500 out of 2400? am I missing something?

^ i think the OP meant 1500/1600 :)

I thought it was out of 1600?

We're referring to the CR+M portion, leaving out writing, I think.

Because the writing section sucks and nobody cares, it seems...

i go to andover, and I am talking about out of 1600.

maybe his essays sucked?

If he can get a 1500/1600 on his SAT, he should've been easily able to get more than a 4.2 W GPA in Andover High... That and he probably didn't show enough on his essays and other parts like others have mentioned

was he asian?

There is not enough info in the OP to really have much insight. There are many with those basic stats that have had trouble this year. It is tough and will remain so for awhile.
