Tour of Duke and UNC

Can we do this in one day? Any other tips or suggestions?

My son and I did this 5 years ago. We took 2 days but there really isn’t any reason why it can’t be done in 1 day. Travel distance is not too bad, the Duke tour was really pretty short since access was available to only a very few buildings. You do have to sign up for both tours so as long as you can schedule it, there should be no issue.

You can do it one day but I would allow a little time to take in the areas around the schools as well. Outside of Duke, Durham is not the nicest place but you should get a feel for both towns. Chapel Hill is more the quintessential college town.

I would not sty in Durham proper. There’s a Hampton Inn and Suites located on 15-501 (I think it may have a Durham address but it is literally right on the border of the two cities) that is about half way between the two schools and would make going in either direction pretty easy. We’ve stayed there numerous times. There is also a relatively new Courtyard and an even newer Marriott Residence Inn both are off 15-501 but on the Chapel Hill side.

Our favorite place to stay is The Carolina Inn which is right in the middle of the campus at UNC. They do offer UNC rates if you call to book the reservation. It’s an historic inn and very convenient to UNC/Franklin St etc.

My son is a UNC grad so if you have any more questions, PM me. I can get you some good restaurant tips, things to do/see etc if you need them

Duke offers separate tours for those interested in Pratt School of Engineering or Trinity. If you want to do both, you’d need to book a morning and an afternoon at Duke.

Thanks for tips so far

They are only 8 miles apart from each other, so it is very feasible to tour both schools in one day. You could tour one from 8-noon, break for lunch and your the other from 1-5.
