What do they come with? What would be helpful to bring? Stackable horizontal trays, vertical trays, bookends? Any suggestions?

They're regular desks: they're a decent size with a couple drawers. They also have a bookshelf. I definitely recommend bringing stackable trays, they really help with organization. Also, if you can find a small printer (not one of those giant 10-in-one printers,) it definitely saves a lot of hassle because the computer labs can get crowded at peak times.

The desks have three decent sized drawers the bottom of them is fairly deep. Than their is a drawer designed for a keyboard, I used this space for doing work on. than the desk space itself is fairly large. Their are then two Shelves for books, or whatever, I put my printer here, a very useful purchase.

here is a picture of a tower a desk

Great picture! That's exactly what mothers like to see!. And if the desk looks like that all year...even better.

Do only towers rooms have desks?

Thanks for the great replies! The photo was a big help.

How is the lighting in the room? Would they need an additional lamp for the desk?

No the desk has a light built into it. I found it more than adequate.
The light is right above where the monitor is in the picture. it is about the length of the monitor as well.
The lighting in the room is very good Their are two main lights one on each side its in the upper left of the picture off the screen.
And two more smaller ones in the main entrance.

I'm almost definite all university owned dorms are furnished with at least a desk, a bed, and a dresser/bureau. Also the tower beds are twin beds but are extra long. I think the size is "twin XL" for buying sheets.

Also for diagrams of how all on campus dorms are designed and for a general idea of what is supplied in the room visit this site and click on overview than floor plans

Are there any closets availabe in the Towers?

The closets in Towers are pretty nice. If you're in a double, each student has his/her own. There are several wire shelves that go across the entire length of the closet, and then an empty space where you can put the micro fridge if you choose to rent one. The closets have no doors, however, so you can hang curtains if you like to close them off.

Here are the dimensions:
The closets are approximately 4' x 2.5' and have three wire frame shelves that are approximately 2' x 1.25' and one wire shelf that is approximately 3.25' x 1.25'.

And to add to the question about the desks: The chairs are really cool, kind of a rocking chair with two positions, so you can lean back pretty far without toppling over! I had never seen a chair like that before. My daughter loved hers.

So each person can have their own micro fridge in their closet instead of sharing? Do most kids share or rent their own?

I think most kids share the micro fridge. They're pretty big inside, plenty of room for two. If you're renting a suite, not likely for freshmen, the micro fridge is probably supplied by Pitt. Otherwise, you have to rent one.

Sorry for the double post, but my edit time ran out. Here's a photo of the micro fridge. As you can see, it consists of three separate units that stack. I recommend renting it for the convenience. It's in the room when you get there, and when you leave you don't have to take it with you! One less thing to worry about during move-in and -out. This is the company Pitt used last year.

Which floors in Tower A are for SPACE?

last semester space floors were on floors 8-11 with floor 11 being the girls floor. I highly recommend space floors. I did it for my freshman year and I met my best friends on space floors. It is a great opportunity. If you have a question all you have to do is walk down the hall because almost everyone is doing the exact same problem you are, and since everyone is an engineer almost everyone is very conscientious about school.

microfridges may be convenient, but from everyone i know that rented one last year, they are not worth it. the fridge barely keeps things cold and the microwave takes forever to get your food warm. even pathfinders said you're better off just buying your own stuff; it's cheaper and you can keep using it from year to year.

i would also recommend talking to your roommate before getting anything, it works out nicely if you can each bring one of those two items.

The only thing to consider about buying a microfridge is that you will than have to get it from your dorm to the car, transport it home at the end of the year and store it. Even though more expensive, it might be more convenient to just rent.
