Towers Pros v Cons

What are some of the pros and cons of Towers, I've heard it doesn't provide a full freshman experience..what do y'all think

Im staying in Towers. My big pros are that the rooms are much larger, its really close to almost all of the frat houses and the food is good. The only real con I can think of is that it is a little farther away from classes and the gym.

My daughter lives in Towers. Of course, I have seen it a few times. I was there two weeks ago. She loves it. While many people on this forum think it is not a good place, she could not be happier. It is a very social dorm. I am told far more so than Jester or the others. The set up is very good. A small kitchen, a nice living room, and two good size bedrooms. Four people share a suite. Two to a bathroom. Nice size walk in closets. They have their own dining facility. The food is not great. She has a ten meal plan, and usually eats lunch on the drag.

If you are going greek, this is a good place to live. Most of the kids who live there do. It is by no means a quiet place. Studying in the room at night can be a challenge if youhave a social suite. My d goes to the study room in the dorm or the library. She loves going from suite to suite when she is done with her studies.

Most of her freshman sisters in live in Towers. While it gets crazy on the weekend, and it smells like beer, she could not be happier with her choice. I am not sure why, but many more OOS students live there than in other dorms. That is not to say that a lot of instate kids live there as well.
Jkaplan, I saw you are thinking about ZBT in another post. Towers has most of their pledge class living there.

Is it mostly freshman or some upperclassmen mixed in? What is the pricing? Much more than on-campus housing? or around the same? And ya, I’m definitely thinking about ZBT, glad to know I will be surrounded by my frat peers.

Towers is 90% freshman. I have heard about some international transfer/exchange students living there, but it is mostly freshman.

The cost is more than public dorms. This probably results in a bit of a class structure. It is probably why many oos students live there. If they can afford OOS tuition, they will spend the extra money to live in a private dorm. Towers also has many of the suburban texas kids living there as well…I hope this does not come off sounding poorly, it is just my observation.

No, not at all…great advice, thank you!

Towers with the 14 meal plan is just shy of $10,000, which I believe puts it in line with San Jac or Duren or something like that

Is the food as bad as some say? I think if I stayed there I would get like a 10 meal plan and cook some…how far is it from the gym?

AEPhi? That’s the only one i can think of with large #s

“Full freshman experience” depends on what you want to experience. If your full freshman experience involves fraternity pledgeship, then you’re going to get the full freshman experience with a large part of your pledge class, and you’re going to meet guys who are pledging other chapters as well. If not, it really depends on what you’re looking for.

As for girls, most girls at Towers are either Jewish or foreign. Most of the sororities’ pledge classes are going to be at SRD or Hardin.

Is it a huge party dorm? Even during the week?

What would you suggest for my son who has not applied for housing yet? Paid the 50 deposit last night, what happens next? He is in Engineering.

Coming from Illinois, we are not familiar with the campus. How far is Towers from the Library and Engineering School. Also, can you sign up for Towers and be assigned random roommmates, or do most people room with people they already know there? When does this dorm fill up? Is it getting late to make this choice?

Engineering: very far
FAC Library: about 2.5 blocks

Yes on random room mates, but most people room with people they know or met in summer session/orientation.

I think they don’t fill up completely even late

my daughter met her roommate on a facebook group. Last year there was a towers 2013 group. It may have been a sub group. She started on line chats with different girls, became friends with a girl from NY. They met at roundup, decided to be roommates, and paid their deposit that weekend. They met their suitemate the same weekend. She went random.

I suggest looking for UT 2014 groups. There should be a towers group as well. If not, start one. it seemed to work for a lot of people living there.

Good Luck
