I just got accepted to Towson University for music, but I don't know how good the program really is. Could anyone tell me more about this school?

Congratulations! I know very little detail, but I understand they are very good for voice. I think they got quite a lot of money a few years back to expand their music school and the reports have been promising.

Which instrument? I live about 5 minutes from campus and my D has several friends there for voice.

starlessyoru, congrats. If you want to specify the instrument and degree (BM, BA, or other) I'd be happy to add it to the http://talk.collegeconfidential.com/music-major/618208-master-list-music-school-acceptances-fall-2009-a.html thread.

I know from prior thread you had said you were applying to a number of schools for flute. Was it performance or music ed concentration?

Towson has had a strong regional rep as a very solid music ed school, and is particularly well known in the Maryland region.

Congrats starless -

I went to Towson (for communications) a million years ago and live 10 minutes from campus. While I can't speak for the flute program, I know lots about the area. The university keeps getting stronger (and bigger!). The performing arts center was expanded and reopened a few years ago. My D's voice teacher is just finishing her master's there and I would be happy to ask any specific questions you might have if you want to send me a PM.

Thanks everyone! I'm really happy it's the first school I auditioned for flute. Even though, I didn't think it was my best audition, I happy I got accepted in the music ed program.

I know nothing about the flute instruction there, but the performing arts center is really nice and I believe there are lots of performance opportunities. I have been to concerts there and am impressed by the level of talent.

My daughter (violist, Jr in HS) is interested in Music Ed and i’ve heard about Towson. I haven’t seen anything about it but your posting! What is the surrounding area like since she will be student teaching? Are you familiar with their orchestra?

We appreciate any info you have on Towson!

Hi car,

I grew up nearby, went to Towson myself (not for music) and live about 5 miles from Towson. The music ed program has an excellent reputation - apparently it trains more Maryland music educators than any other institution. The Balto. County schools are excellent; she should have no problems with student teaching. Towson and the surrounding areas are very nice. If you have specific questions please send me a PM.

Good luck with the search!

We live 2 hours away and students from our school (for a field trip) went to Towson for the music program, I think it’s good.

hi starlessyoru.this is so crazy because this is EXACTLY what happened to me.towson was my first audition and i didnt think i played my best but i got in.im a flute music ed major also lol.
i cant speak for the whole music department, but the flute professor is my teacher in highschool and she’s absolutely amazing!trust me.she was like, principal fllute at the opera company(before they closed of course)and playes in a bunch of stuff.well worth it.
hope to see u this fall :)

wow that is crazy! I was wondering…when did you audition?

Hi Starlessyoru,

I have always been under the impression that Towson is better for Music Ed than for Performance. Luckily, their music program is expanding and that always means good things for the people who are attending during the expansion. When I applied 5 years ago the program was on the way up, so I can only imagine where it is now. Congrats

Towson was founded in the 1860s as a “normal school” to train teachers. That focus remains strong and also extends to the music department, which prepares more music teachers for Maryland schools than any other institution. I would say its reputation for performance is gaining but is certainly nothing like Peabody’s, a few miles down the road. (Of course, its tuition is nothing like Peabody’s either!)
