I am a MD resident right now and would like to move to FL due to my husband's passing. I am 3 classes away from getting my Associate Degree and would then like to move to FL and finish my Bachelor Degree there but at an University in MD (online). My first question is, is that possible? I want to make sure I still get my financial aid, grants etc. and don't loose any credits that's why I don't want to just transfer to a FL University. What options do I have?

I’m sorry for your loss. I would go ahead and finish up those three classes and get your AD. Then contact schools in FL that would accept your credit, Id imagine that some schools would and others wouldnt since it’s online.

Are you considering UMUC ? They have a huge online program. Pick up the phone and give them a call about your situation. They will have useful ideas for you.

Yes, I am considering UMUC as well but I am not sure how being out-of-state will work. I mean I would be considered a FL citizen after a year I believe. Does that mean that after a year I would have to pay out-of-state tuition since I no longer will be a MD citizen? I don’t want to to just transfer to a University in FL because I might loose too many classes and because of the grants as well

I don’t know what the UMUC policy is about moving once you have started your degree. You need to ask them. I do know that active military personnel and their dependents pay in state tuition no matter where they are physically located. UMUC might have a similar policy for continuing students who move out of state.

Good luck!

This is what it says on their website:

C. In-state Status

To qualify for in-state tuition, a student must demonstrate that, for at least twelve (12)consecutive months immediately prior to and including the last date available to register for courses in the semester/term for which the student seeks in-state tuition status, the student had the continuous intent to:

Make Maryland his or her permanent home; and

Abandon his or her former home state; and

Reside in Maryland indefinitely; and

Reside in Maryland primarily for a purpose other than that of attending an educational institution in Maryland.

Satisfying all of the requirements in Section II (and Section III, when applicable) of this policy demonstrates continuous intent and qualifies a student for in-state tuition. Students not entitled to in-state status under this policy shall be assigned out-of-state status for admission and tuition purposes.

My other question is…

If I stay a MD resident and don’t register as a FL resident I should be ok right? I am just going to stay with my sis since I am going through a tough time right now.

“I am going through a tough time right now.”

Are you certain that you want to be in college right now? Would it make life better for you to take a semester off while you figure things out? Is there a counselor at your current CC who can help you think things through?

Staying with your sister for a short time would not affect your state residency - it would be like being on vacation. However the minute you get a job, or a mailing address, or a driver’s license in a different state you have indicated that you intend to live there.

There is nothing wrong with moving to Florida, and starting a whole new life. Maybe that is what you should be doing right now.

Wishing you all the best.

I am very confused I just don’t want to take time off since I want to get my degree as soon as possible. I have to provide for my son and I now so I want to go about it the right way. It is also a good way to keep me busy for a bit eventhough I get distracted a lot right now. Would I get the same financial aid in FL as I am gettin in MD?
