Transfer Admission Doubts!

How hard it is to transfer to Dickinson? What r the statistics like(act average score, GPA, etc)? I'm an international student from Brazil who needs full ride and they are need-aware for intl's! What's the social life off campus like(city, night life, etc)? Does Dickinson tend to be more conservative or liberal? Thanks!

It is pretty tough to get a “full ride” without spectacular scores/grades. If you mean a strictly merit based scholarship, check out the statistics on the Dickinson website – they say what the general requirements are. However, my guess is that these scholarships are primarily for freshman applicants. Maybe someone else who is an international transfer student could address that.

Dickinson is in a fairly small town in Pennsylvania, just off the PA turnpike. About an hour and half from Pittsburgh, and about 2 hours from Philadelphia. Harrisburg (state capitol) is less than half an hour away. There are restaurants, a couple of movie theaters, a swing dance club, and some nice parks for hiking. Public transportation is not great around town. Carlisle has a lot of auto shows on weekends during the fall and spring (which makes the town crowded then). It is also home to the US Army War College, so there is a sizable military family contingent in town. The campus is very nice looking, light gray limestone for most buildings.

There are both liberal and conservative groups on campus. I would say it generally leans liberal (I know for the 2008 elections, the College Democrats had a much larger membership than the College Republicans). But you will find that true for pretty much any US college north of the Mason-Dixon line except for some conservative religious colleges.

What would be a spectacular score, grade to Dickinson? I’ve sent an e-mail to dickinson and they answered they meet the needs of all accepted students. Does anyone know what are the average statistics of a international transfer student who is admitted and receive full financial aid? I’ve read that some colleges (like Hamilton) generally takes only junior transfers. Does Dickinson also take sophomore transfers? Thank you!

They do take sophomore transfers. Financial aid for transfers is extremely limited, almost nonexistent. The chances of a full ride as a transfer international or not are nearly zero. Standardized testing also doesn’t count for much as a transfer, the most important thing is your college gpa.

I’ve sent them an e-mail asking about my odds, but they haven’t aswered me whether my chances are good or not. I’m also looking at Lafayette, and so far I’ve found they’re very similar, altough it seems that Dickinson is more generous when it comes to financial aid (both r need-aware). I’ve read some comments on College ******* and a lot of students say that the social life at Lafayette sucks, especially for intl’s. They say that whites hang w/ whites, blacks w/ blacks, intl’s w/ intl’s, and that intl’s is somewhat excluded and that in general, Lafayette is a preppy school. Is this correct? Some Dickinson students say that it’s easier for intl’s to fit into, altough the city is more isolated and rural, and a little bit more conservative( I’m very liberal). Lafayette’s location is better than Dickinson’s and it tends to be more liberal, but is still a little conservative (some students said that religious groups and gay acceptance are other areas that need diversification on campus). Dartmouth is my other option. It’s need-blind for intl’s, but their transfer acceptance rate is around 4%! Considering that the whole application process is much more complicated and expensive for intl’s (besides my other 3 options, because of financial circunstances, I can only pick one out of those 3 colleges) and my situation, which college do you think I should apply to? I mean, the college which I have more chances to be admitted to and be happy on campus. (remember I’m very liberal and want to hang out w/ different people). Thanks for ur time and patience!

I am kind of confused by your 3 college list. Dartmouth is MUCH more difficult to get into than Dickinson (Dartmouth is an Ivy, Dickinson is a 2nd tier LAC, usually ranked in the high 40s in USNWR). Dickinson has a pretty large liberal element (my D was VP of the College Democrats there, which is considered liberal here in the US). She has gay friends at school, no issues with that as far as I can tell. But… you need to be somewhat tolerant of different political perspectives whereever you go unless you want to be considered a real jerk…

I don’t know much about Lafayette, but I can tell you that your odds of admission are much better at Dickinson even though you haven’t provided stats.

I looked at Dartmouth because it’s one of the few colleges who r need-blind 4 intl’s. But after checking their acceptance rate, I’m considering replacing it for Dickinson, or Lafayette. My other options (Brown, Cornell, and Tufts) are kinda’ tough to get into, so I need a safety. My concern about Dickinson is the location. Before attending (if ever admitted), I’ll be living in Rio de Janeiro (over 3 thousand inhabitants), and I’m afraid of being shocked by its isolation. If possible, could you give me some information about Carlisle, especially about its nightlife, clubs, bars (I’ll be 21 when attending)? In this case, Lafayette would be a better option once it’s a 1 hour drive from NYC, but again, I don’t know if Lafayette’s environment is good for intl’s (according to some students, it sucks). I really don’t know what to do. Thanks again!

Carlisle is about as different from Rio as could possibly be. It’s a charming but very small town, not much in the way of nightlife except for a couple of bars and a collection of nice little restaurants. If you want big-city action, it won’t fill that bill. But it’s a fabulous campus and seems to have a lot of events and happy students.

I concur with researching3emb. There are more isolated campuses in the US, for sure. But Carlisle is not hopping compared to Rio! My D is not yet 21 (a few more weeks  ), and not much of a partier, so I can’t really talk about the club/bar scene. Also… Dickinson is a fairly small school (maybe 2,500 students). I wonder if you are looking for a bigger student body…

You haven’t said anything about your stats, Brown and Cornell are also big reach schools for almost all students (like Dartmouth). If you need a full ride, you are probably barking up the wrong trees, international or not. And even if they meet “full need”, that will include loans from almost all schools, unless you have very high stats compared to the rest of their applicant pool.

I’ve just start college this March. I’ll apply as a transfer to enter fall 2012, so I don’t have any college stats yet. I don’t know if it helps, but my high school average was A (we don’t calculate GPA here in Brazil). I took the TOEFL last year for the first time and got a 90. I’ll take it again in July to try to get at least a 100. I haven’t take the ACT yet, just a practice test on which I got a 30.

I probably am barking up the wrong trees, but the few schools who are need-blind for international transfers students are Harvard, Yale, etc. Needless to say they are VERY BIG reach schools for me. Therefore, I’ll apply to colleges that although I have fewer chances to receive a full ride, I have greater chances academically. If you know any college that I’d have big chances and could prepare me to get into top law schools like Yale later on, would be very helpful.

So, the schools I’ll apply to are Brown, Tufts, and Cornell. Now I have to decide between Lafayette and Dickinson. I’m leaning towards Lafayette, but I haven’t made up my mind yet because some lafayette students said the campus are too segregrated (white hangs w/ white, intl w/ intl, etc). Which one do you think I should apply to? I mean, where do you think I would be admitted? Thank you!

Apply to the school because you want to go there, not as a stepping stone to Yale Law. A 30 ACT will not blow their socks off at Dickinson, but you may get admitted. But you are likey to come out of Dickinson with very large loans, as you are not going to get merit aid as a transfer student. You say you need a full ride, you are VERY unlikely to get anything close to that at Dickinson (which was stated previously on this thred).

I would suggest that if you need a full ride, and you are an international and a transfer student, that you lower your sites significantly. Just trying to paint a realistic picture for you.

Thank you! So, I think I won’t apply to Dickinson. I didn’t really want to go there. I just thought it was a safety. Guess I was wrong. I think I’ll end up picking either Lafayette or Occidental as my fourth and last option. There aren’t many options left for me as an international transfer. I’ve found an organization here in Brazil that offers this kind of guindance. I’ll go there next week and see how they can help me out with this. Maybe it will get “easier” to get a full ride if I exceed academically. Some people told me that I may have some chances at Tufts because they are always looking for diversity and they would like to have a brazilian student now that Brazil is on the spotlight.
