I hope to apply to NYU as a transfer applicant in the upcoming months for Spring 2011 admission. I am interested in Steinhardt's media and communications program because I hope to have a career in that field in the future, but educationally, I feel that studying a liberal arts subject at CAS would be better. However, from my understanding, CAS is extremely difficult to be accepted to as a transfer applicant, especially without exceptional stats. Unfortunately, my present GPA is less than stellar, and I am in need of advice. Should I apply to Steinhardt over CAS because I might have a better chance? If I apply to CAS, is there a chance I will get placed into the Liberal Studies Program (I wouldn't mind that either)? Should I wait another semester before I apply to improve my GPA (I hope to avoid this because I really am not happy at my current college)?

I transferred to Steinhardt MCC with a 3.4, and my HS stats weren’t as high as yours. You would be a match for MCC, because Steinhardt looks for fit, rather than just numbers.

Transfers cannot be placed in LSP, and as I’m sure you know, you can only apply to transfer to one NYU division at a time. Your chances at CAS will depend on what major you apply to. It is not extremely difficult to get into CAS, but it is competitive.

The takeaway is: you would be okay to apply to Steinhardt as you are, but if you want to apply to CAS, wait a semester and bring your GPA up.
