Transfer Advice out of NYU..

Hey all,

I’m currently a sophomore at NYU enrolled in CAS majoring in Pre-Business/Economics and Mathematics. If you wouldn't mind could you just run through my resume/transcript and give me an honest evaluation?

My dream would be to transfer to UPenn, Dartmouth, Cornell or Brown. I don't expect to get in to any of them, but I would at least like to try. I'm very open to suggestions of other schools with good economics departments. The only reason I'm trying to transfer is because of financial reasons. I enjoy NYU but living in New York City is extremely expensive and I honestly don't think my parents can afford it outside of tuition. So really there isn't anything I'm looking for or not looking for in a new school because I adapt pretty well to new environments. So I would definitely be receptive to any schools with a good economics program outside of those mentioned.

My SATs are unfortunately very weak. I had a 660 M and 600 V :-( . Also, my high school did not rank so I don’t know what I was in relation to everyone else. In addition to my resume, I will be interning at JPMorgan Chase over the summer in New York City, I just haven’t had a chance to add it yet.

This is my college transcript thus far:

Prose Composition I: B+

In terms of recommendations, I could definitely get amazing ones from my two mathematics teachers. Even though I got a B in Calculus II class, my teacher told me I was the hardest working student she has ever had. Also, I had the same teacher for Social Foundations I and Topics Modern Society. He said he would be eager to write me a recommendation and I think it would be very good since he is nationally known. My manager at Best Buy wrote me a recommendation too, so I could send that if necessary.

Sorry about the length, but I just want to be thorough to get the best advice. Thank you for suffering through it haha. But seriously, thank you for any help, I truly appreciate it.

Sorry, I just forgot two things.

Each class I have taken is 4 credits each.

Next semester, I will have an 18 credit courseload:

Calculus III 4.0
Near Eastern Cultures 4.0
Topics in Modern Culture 4.0
Statistics 6.0

Why Do You Want To Transfer From N.y.u. And Just A Stupid Question: But Do The Olsen Twins Still Go There????

Dartmouth, Cornell And Brown Are Pretty Much On The Same Scale As N.y.u. So I'd Say Give It A Chance:)

No, they aren't.

Nspeds - I Meant On The "same Scale" Meaning Reputation Wise They Are All Reputed And Well Recieved! Thanks For Dissecting And Analyzing All My Input! Maybe next time I'll be more clear so I can save you some time.

What the...

How can Dartmouth Cornell and Brown be at all near NYU. Sure NYU is a great program but it cannot compare to the reputations of those three Ivies. Consider (even in the business world) that Dartmouth's Tuck School of Business came out on top AGAIN in the WSJs BSchool review. Further, there are varying degrees of reputation. For example, you are really high on UTs McCombs school which is fantastic and highly reputed. But the school is not on the same level as Wharton is it?

Way off, dude.

ok, anyway, can i get some actual advice from someone instead of bickering?

The problem you may have is reason for transfering. Will you be letting these schools know you want to transfer for financial reasons? I wonder if you can make a convincing argument for that.

If your parents can afford NYU tuition, yes living in NYC is very expensive, but Philadelphia and Providence aren't exactly cheap. And you've already "afforded" a year and a half at NYU, presumably 2 full years by the time of graduation. So, if I understand you correctly, you're really talking about transfering over the difference in expenses, beyond tuition, between lets say NYU and Penn, for 2 years. I doubt if that in itself will come across as a good reason to transfer.

Plus you are transfering from a highly regarded Econ/math program at NYU. I believe the schools you're applying to will want to know specifically what they have that NYU doesn't, which would be a hard sell coming from NYU.

Good luck.

Not at all. One's reasons for transferring need not be solely academic. He/She could also have social reasons.

Arguably, it would be difficult for me to make a case for transferring from Georgetown to UChicago or Rice, but I was accepted at both schools. I used both academic and social reasons for my justification.

In general youre right, I understand that, but in this case op says "I adapt pretty well to new environments" and "there isn't anything I'm looking for or not looking for in a new school"...his reason for transfering is financial which is what I was addressing.

thank you for your responses.

but, my reason for transferring is definitely because of finances but not solely because of expenses. when you read nyu is 41k a year, it is literally 41k a year. it is regarded as one of the worst financial aid institutions in the nation. so my thinking was, if i'm going to spend 41k a year regardless of where i go (which seems to be trend now), why wouldn't i try to go to a better academic school if i can? what do you guys think of this argument for a transfer application, would it be persuasive enough?

Just curious...did you go through GSP? And how did you take Economics I before Economics II?

still in it (last semester) and economics I is not connected to economics II. i mean it is with some concepts but you do not need to know one in order to know the other.

That's cool - You might want to consider applying to Cornell ILR. It's a great program and many students from there go into business fields such as investment banking.

In any case, GSP is good for transferring because it gives you a strong liberal arts background, your professors know you, and Cornell knows this (I spoke with the transfer counselor and several GSP students who transferred) so you are looked upon favorably in the transfer admissions process.

NYU seems to be popular at placing transfer students into ivies and other top 20 schools. Keep up the good GPA and give it a shot. I doubt your SATs matter too much b/c of where you are, but if you're uncomfortable with them (as they are low), you should retake.

If you REALLY want to get out of NYU though, you'll need to add some more matchish schools as those are all competitive for anyone and you have no guarantee.

eh retaking is not the greatest idea for my situation really. i'm not completely dissatisfied with nyu nor would i be upset with an nyu degree. since the semester is about to start im gunna have no time to study for the sat its really not even an option. i would rather take my chances with a high gpa and low sat than a potentially lower gpa and less than stellar SAT.
