Transfer Advice

The past year or so has been a tough one for me. With moving several times, getting my first job, and becoming independent from my parents, saying that leaving my comfort zone would be an understatement. Throughout high school, I was challenged extensively with 10 AP classes with other extracurricular activities to ensure my acceptance to one of the big state schools. I soon came to realize how competitive admissions were and was shocked to hear that I was rejected with a 3.9 GPA and 1700 SAT score under my belt. I know the credentials weren't perfect, but I figured that UGA and Georgia Tech would be more forgiving than ivy league schools. So I was left with two other schools: Georgia Southern University and Kennesaw State University. By going to Kennesaw State, I would have a car of my own and could commute from home. On the other hand, I would rely on walking to get around Georgia Southern but I would have the luxury of living on my own. The decision took more than three months before finally deciding to attend Georgia Southern and I still had mixed thoughts on the decision. Despite getting rejected from UGA and Georgia Tech, I still had aspirations for going to a bigger school so the thought of transferring remained relevant in my mind. Although I've had my fair share of good times in Statesboro, I felt homesick and isolated from my network of friends from the Atlanta area. I decided to transfer to Kennesaw State next semester and abide by the commuting from home with my own car policy. I'm hoping that transferring out of the `boro will ultimately be the best decision but I continue to have my doubts (mainly with the thought of moving back in with my parents). Maybe I just had unrealistic expectations of what college was like or possibly just had trouble adjusting to so much life change all at once. Going forward, my mentality about transferring to UGA or Georgia Tech has subdued to a certain extent. I want to relish my times in college and not always think about if the grass is greener somewhere else. Transferring is a big deal and certainly a hassle so I definitely want to make the right choice. With all of that being said...is transferring to a bigger school like UGA or Georgia Tech worth it? Is commuting to college just as exciting as living on campus? Does having an undergraduate degree in business from UGA or Tech hold greater value from that of Kennesaw State? Or of equal value? Would joining a fraternity or becoming involved in other clubs enhance my college experience? Any advice would be greatly appreciated.

“is transferring to a bigger school like UGA or Georgia Tech worth it?” cannot say. Depends on many factors and the person.

" Is commuting to college just as exciting as living on campus?" No

“Does having an undergraduate degree in business from UGA or Tech hold greater value from that of Kennesaw State? Or of equal value?” One could argue greater value if one subscribes to believing in rankings. However, remember a degree is what you make of it. Plenty of people go on to do great things without having a prestigious or highly ranked school on their diplomas. I believe all your choices are AACSB accredited schools. You would get a fine undergrad b school education at any of them. You should look into job placement info, starting salary information, etc. in a “destinations” type report for recent grads to help you make a decision on the relative value. Realize though that this should only be one of many factors when choosing a school.

" Would joining a fraternity or becoming involved in other clubs enhance my college experience?" yes to joining clubs. Any many argue that greek life enhances one’s college experience. IMO that definitely depends on the person and the school. Not being a part of greek life doesn’t mean your college experience will somehow be lacking .
