Transfer Advice

I am an incoming freshman undergrad student and I was wondering what are your guys’ take on transferring with my stats. I plan on transferring after my fall semester of my freshman year and I was wondering if I should attempt to transfer at that time or wait it out until the end of my freshman year to apply. The colleges that I am currently thinking about are NYU and Stevens Institute of Technology.

HS:
GPA- 92, around 3.7 I believe not too sure
SAT: 1380, Math: 790 English: 590(pretty bad)
Volunteered during my senior year basically the whole year
AP Calc BC: 4 applied to my classes in the fall so I will be attending Calc 3 at my college
Class Rank: graduated 150 out of 900(I am not sure this helps but here it is anyway)
Senior Grades were not too bad, had 3 90s and the last 2 were high 80s like 88 or 89, I believe.

Over the summer, I was able to land a job at the same place that I volunteered at, during the summer. At my college currently, I am enrolled as an engineering undergrad in Mechanical and would like to transfer as the same major into those colleges. I have a good feeling that my college grades would hover around the high 3s(3.7-4.0) for GPA in my first semester. Right now I am contemplating on whether to wait it out a year or to just transfer after 1st semester, the advice is much appreciated. Thanks!

You cannot transfer out of an institution with only one semester under your belt.

Are you going to a community college or a 4-year institution?

For these colleges, that I chose I had already contacted them to see if they allow any transfers after their first semesters and both allow it. I currently attend a 4-year university under the CUNY system in NYC.

Yes, you can technically apply after one semester. But should NOT do that. Since you have virtually no college coursework under your belt, NYU / Stevens will essentially be looking at your high school records. While you’ll technically be a transfer applicant, you’ll be treated as a high school applicant.

Why do you want to transfer from your CUNY?

I guess one of the factors would be the time it takes to travel back and forth to the college itself which is pretty time-consuming. Another thing would be the fact, that the social life both on and out of campus to not the best.

Since you’re transferring from another 4-year institution, you’re going to have to explain why you want to transfer. The thing is, although bad social life is a common reason why students transfer, you can’t write that down as one of your reasons.

I think you have a solid chance for NYU if you retake your SAT and shoot for high 1400’s, and kick butt in your college classes.

Thanks for the advice!

If you dislike the place you are registered for for this fall so much, why don’t you just ask to defer enrollment, take a gap year, and apply to the places that you do want to attend? Nowhere is it written that you have to go to college somewhere, anywhere, immediately after high school.
