Transfer After Expulsion

Hello,

I am a student who was expelled from a top 20 school for academic integrity 2 years ago. I was immature and unready for college. The pressures of rigorous schoolwork in addition to other personal problems resulted in me making some really bad decisions during my freshman year, which resulted in my expulsion.

I know that I'll be judged harshly by the people of this forum. Let me just say that the actions I took during the time were anomalous. Regardless of how my character was before and during the incident, I can confidently say that the expulsion was one of the best things that happened to me. My relationship with my parents as well as my maturity has substantially increased, and I feel ready to start over.

The dean and professors of said incidents have said that they are willing to positively recommend me, even speak on my behalf when I decide to transfer.

I have since attended a full year of community college and am preparing to apply as a transfer. My first question is whether or not I have a shot in hell for any top 20 private colleges. I'm mainly looking at colleges with high transfer rates such as Vanderbilt and Notre Dame. My SAT scores are near perfect and my community college grades are straight A's. Looking at transfer threads on CC, I have no doubt that my extracurriculars will be at the top of the curve for both of these colleges (my dean and community college counselor agrees).

My second question is how I should approach applying to these colleges, if I do have a chance. I want to clarify that I am going to confess to all the colleges that I apply to. However, I have been entertaining the idea of telling them AFTER the acceptance, given support of my previous dean and assuming I get in. The reason I want to do this is because I want the admissions office to see my value as an applicant BEFORE they see my academic integrity violations. I will take necessary precautions to ensure them that I had planned to tell them eventually. Is this a terrible idea?

If I don't have a shot at said private colleges, what should I do in order to get back on track educationally?

Thank You

It is never good to withhold information of this nature on an application. Furthermore it is likely that the transcript form the university you were expelled from will have an annotation about why you were expelled and you have to send all of your transcripts…

I don’t see a reason why you can’t apply to your “top universities” of choice but you would do well to also apply to somewhat less selective universities as well just to hedge your bets. No one can tell you that you have no shot at the colleges you mention, you just have to try.

Two threads @ the same time???
