Hello all,
I’m putting in a Transfer application to WPI for Fall 2018. I have a 3.92 GPA in Civil Engineering at Clarkson University.
Clubs:
-Associated General Contractors
-Clarkson University Student Association
-American Society of Civil Engineers
-American Chemical Society
-Steel Bridge
-Humans vs Zombies
-Admissions Tour Guide
-Potentially tutoring
-Potentially either research or being a TA(I’m in talks to do research, had an offer to be a TA but funding got pulled so that’s in limbo at the moment)
High school I didn’t do as well- 3.4 GPA, 1430-ish on SATs, 32 on ACT. I was sick for a month in Sophomore year, and as a result took a huge hit to my GPA(I wrote about this).
What are my chances for acceptance?
Thanks for any help!

In case you have not read this yet, view: https://www.wpi.edu/admissions/undergraduate/apply/how-to/application-deadlines/transfer-students
Given your GPA and your current school, the question turns on the spaces available in the department to which you are applying, For some reason, the ME department is going crazy, but CE is riding fairly steadily in the overall number of students. These impacts are a product of entering freshman decisions because students are not restricted to a major in making their choices. The unpredictable variable here is the number of CE transfer applicants this year. The school has some articulation agreements with two Community Colleges for guaranteed transfer when certain criteria have been met. It is hard to know how many of these students are into CE. My guess is they are after CS or ME. Last year they took about 12 students in on articulation agreements.
The only data I can find from last year shows an overall acceptance rate of 27% for transfers. That could mean 0% for ME and 50% for CE. Make sure the person in the admissions office who manages transfers knows you were a tour guide at Clarkson. This speaks to a set of skills not found in every good student. She/he does not even have complete control of the decision as it rest primarily in the hands of the CE department.
My guess is you will be accepted, but I don’t want to give you your money back on a gamble. I’m just an old, retired alumnus!
Best of luck!
Thank you for the info!
Going to your info about being a tour guide-I’ve got that on my resume and my CommonApp activities page. Should I reach out to the admissions officer(if I can find their contact info) via email to inform them beyond what’s already going to be in my application?
Thank you very much for the information-hopefully there will be spaces. If not, I have other choices, but WPI was definitely my top choice the first time around and may remain such this time.
The tour guide listing should be OK on your common application.
Okay, sounds good. Thanks!
