Transfer - Brown, Cornell, Johns Hopkins, NYU

Hello all, here are my stats. I am applying for transfer admission at NYU, Brown, Cornell, and Johns Hopkins in the fall of 2010, and I would really appreciate some feedback. Thanks so much!

History/Religious Studies major

Junior college GPA = 4.0. Straight A's for four semesters.

Mexican

Dean's highest honors (4 semesters)

ECs
1) I have played music for seven years, and noted that I have toured and put out albums with two bands. I also teach music, and run my own recording studio.
2) I make films, and noted that I won the 2008 Parting Shots Film Festival in the best art film category.
3) I have volunteered at the local animal shelter for two years. I also donate my hair every time it gets long enough to Locks of Love.
4) I noted that I am in two intramural sports leagues, as well as a hiking club. I also mentioned my love for biking. I am also in the Astronomy Club at my school.
5) I described how I'm putting together a detailed family history (I am a History major). I am compiling all the information into a book.

Work: I have worked at the Santa Rosa Junior College Bookstore for the last two years. I worked for an internet search company for a year from June 08 to July 09. I worked my senior year in high school at a movie theater for seven months.

I feel that my essays and short answers are at least decent. In my common app essay I explained that I did not enjoy high school, but how as soon as I enrolled at Santa Rosa Junior College I began to love academics, and that now History/Religious Studies is my passion.

In high school I had a 3.2 GPA, two D's, and virtually nothing going for me. I'm hoping that since my essay is about how I made a transformation when I entered college that this will make sense and not hurt my chances terribly.

Additionally I never took the SATs because I was a dead end high school kid, so will that count against me? None of these schools require them for transfers.

I did not take calculus or any languages. I mostly took history, soft science, and social sciences.

Thanks so much!

I also forgot to mention my letter of rec was done by a History professor I had for three semesters and who graduated from grad school at Princeton.

Brown- Reach
Cornell- Reach
John Hopkins- Low Reach
NYU- Low Reach/High Match
High School GPA is a very important tool in transfers and with all due respect, it isnt up to par. Hopefully, they understand the big transformation and epiphany you had. However, if not for your URM status, I would predict rejections for all. I suggest you aim for slightly lower such as schools like UMich and UNC-Ch. Good luck.

Thanks Golfer. I’ve emailed these schools and talked to a few admissions people and I hope that the high school GPA isn’t as big of a deal as you say it is. They say that the first three and most important things they look at are 1) GPA 2) Letters of Rec, and 3) Essays. Then they look at 4) ECs 5) SATs/ACTs (not applicable), and 6) high school records (for people out of high school more than a year).

I should also add I’m applying for Junior year standing.
