Transfer Chances *External*

So first of all a little background.
I'm originally from pittsburgh, and I didnt think that I wanted to stick around home for college, so I didn't even bother applying to CMU. I ended up having to choose between UC Berkeley and UNC-Chapel hill for mathematics/physics. UNC gave me a generous scholarship and they aren't in nearly the financial trouble that Berkeley is in, so I picked UNC. (OOS for both)

UNC's great, but it's not the right place for me. I am a middle-class white kid who grew up in the inner city and I'm never going to be happy in the south. I am going to apply to a few places for transfer admissions and CMU is somewhere I'm interested in.

I really know nothing about transfer admissions so some help here would be greatly appreciated.

I can get letters of recommendation from several professors that should be nice if those are good for transfer admissions.

SAT
Math 800
CR 710
W 730

Math 2 800
Physics 790

HS GPA was a 4.0

I'll probably end up with around a 3.6-3.7 for this semester while taking an honors english class, intro physics, a senior level math class, and a jazz class

I took 7 math classes at UPitt while in high school and I'm taking 3 more this year at UNC

If anyone could give some advice I'd be grateful

As long as you’re not gunning for SCS I think you’ve got a spectacular chance for admissions… what math? Our math department is always looking to better itself.

The math class I’m taking right now is a junior/senior level class called “Introduction to Dynamics” which is about chaos in discreet dynamical systems and fractals and, well, stuff =P.

I’m going to be pursuing analysis and topology, and their applications to mathematical physics, which is what’s attractive about the applied nature of most of the research in CMU’s math department.

Good stuff! I’m assuming you’re a sophomore since you have a GPA? I’d guess you’re in.

Actually I’m a freshman; the 3.6-3.7 is what I’m expecting for this semester.

I know that they don’t usually accept many transfers mid-year, do you think it would be better to wait until I’ve finished a year here?

From both an admissions and college life standpoint, I’d wait until you finish your year.
