Hello!
I am currently I freshman studying at the University of Mary Washington in Virginia. I wanted to attend Georgia after high school, but unfortunately was put on the waitlist and didn’t get in. I am not currently happy at my school, and have decided to consider transferring to UGA. I’ll list my credentials below, but what are my chances of getting in to Georgia? And before anyone says anything about it, yes I have 30 credits already. I walked into college with 18 credits from APs. It’s my dream school, I’ve always wanted to attend.
Credentials
Current GPA: 3.23
Current Credits Earned ( by end of semester): 34
Intended Major (at UMW and UGA): Psychology (intend to pursue graduate studies in major and become Clinical Psychologist)
Extracurriculars: Member of Zeta Omega Delta (off campus sorority that focuses on philanthropy in Fredericksburg) (Public Relations Officer), Writer for the UMW Odyssey niche (Write weekly pieces for public consumption and enjoyment, considered an unpaid internship), UMW Tour guide (lead tours at UMW, introduce prospective students to campus life and school information)
Misc: earned $8000 in scholarship money at UMW, older brother committed suicide so thats why I’m pursuing Psychology, have letters of rec from a VERY prominent alumni (former football player who won the Heisman trophy and is well respected at schools) as well as two recent alumni.
Feedback? Do I have a chance of getting in?
It’s a little ironic that your a tour guide for your school but not happy there, but it is what it is I guess.
Yah its really easy to transfer. With those stats you are just fine. Really, extracurriclurs or LOR don’t really matter as much as you think. It’s mostly about GPA and credits earned, and in that field you are fine.
However, the cost factor for OOS students must be considered. It will probably be expensive as you’ll be paying the full price tag. It’s really not worth it on the grand scheme of things.
I would suggest you seek out summer research or internship opportunities at UGA in Psychology. That will allow you to feel UGA while at the same time not waste so much money on tuition (and rather get paid).
This will help you a lot if you choose to pursue your M.A. or PsyD degree at UGA in the future.
Ok so Unfortunately my GPA has dropped from what I thought I was going to get to a 3.06. I checked the transfer FaQs and I know that the min GPA requirement is a 3.2 to transfer at UGA. I have had a lot of people tell me that they accept some students though under that mark because of special circumstances. For me, I had a lot of trouble adjusting to college because of my brother’s death (he died right before I left) and my grades suffered because of that. Should I still apply and explain what happened, or will they just straight-up deny me anyways?? Also thanks for the other helpful advice
Also, because of my family’s financial status and the fact that they are no longer paying two tuitions, OOS tuition is actually quite visible for me and not too much more than my current. Thank you for mentioning that though
