So I am currently a ucsc freshman and my classes start in two days. I would really like to transfer to UCI as soon as possible and was wondering if this would work:
I would take about 20 units a quarter + taking some courses over summer + my AP scores would get me more than 90 units by fall 2017.
I was wondering if I could apply to UCI as a junior transfer for fall 2018 without being enrolled in UCSC for my sophomore year.
I know I have enough credits and I meet the prerequisites but would it affect my chances if I took a year off for work and traveling?

Going into UCSC with the intention of already transferring without giving it a chance is not a great way to begin your college career.

If you already have your mind set to transfer, why not start at a CCC and TAG to UCI. If you meet all the TAG course and GPA requirements, then are guaranteed an acceptance.

If you need to start at UCSC then you should realize that a heavy load is 17 units/quarter so by taking 20 units, your GPA will probably take a huge hit and you want a competitive GPA for transfer. If you have never experienced the college quarter system, you will be in for a rude awakening. It is very fast paced and you need to hit the ground running. I suggest you take 13-15 units 1st quarter to get acclimated. If you feel you can handle more then I would take more units Winter quarter.

If you plan to apply for Fall 2018, what are you rushing to get the classes done by end of summer 2017?
Are you sure all your AP credits will be transferable?
I suggest you talk to a UC transfer advisor at your local CCC or UCSC and help you come up with a realistic plan to transfer.
Good luck.
