Hey, i'm a prospective transfer student and I've been mainly eyeing USC (southern California) for Communication and UVA for English.

I just got my grades back for Fall semester: A, A, A, A-, B. Final: 3.73 gpa.

I go to Penn State, btw.

My high school grades were so...blah. 3.3-3.4 gpa, 1800 SAT, 27 ACT.

I'm mostly taking gen eds that both school require, but I was wondering if UVA is a realistic for me? If it's not, then I wouldn't even bother applying. I'm planning on keeping my gpa above the 3.7 line for Spring semester. At Penn State, I've become massively involved with the school's newspaper, student film organization, and lgbt organization. Is UVA not lgbt friendly? Overall, would I be considered competitive for UVA? My essays will be good, so don't worry about that.

I made a post in another thread, but it would be better if I just made my own thread in the UVA section.

I think that your chances are alright. You have a decent college GPA, but lowish test scores/hs gpa. I definitely think you should apply, but you should also know that you could be rejected. As for the social life at UVA, it’s great. Most people are really nice and fun. There is definitely a work hard play hard sort of atmosphere here. As for LGBT groups, we have a few I believe (I’m not involved in any). I know that there is a LGBT resource center at Newcomb Hall and that there is a gay alumni group called the Serpantine Society. On a scale of 1-10, I would rate LGBT acceptance around an 8. I like to think that it’s a pretty accepting place.

For other schools, definitely apply to UVA/USC. You should also apply to UNC as it is very similar to UVA, just a bit easier to get into for transfers.

If you have any more questions, feel free to PM me

^ Awesome. Thanks for the in-depth response! You know, I’m just going to apply anyway. What have I got to lose? Other than time, a little bit of money, and effort. If I don’t get in, then so be it. I was thinking about UNC, as well, since they have a good a “communication studies” and “journalism” major. I’m mainly trying to group some schools with strong communication and liberal arts program (since I might not go into the communication route for sure) that I have a “decent” chance at getting into.
