Transfer Chances

This year, I was accepted to Elliott, but I declined admission to attend NYU-CAS instead so I could explore interests outside of international relations instead. However, I have had a change of heart and decided that I would like to study international relations instead. Would it be possible to apply for transfer into Elliot for the spring semester? Am I better off staying for at least a year and applying for the fall semester?
Any input would be great.

How do you know you won’t like NYU or its classes? Try to give it a chance; the schools are similar enough, and maybe take an IR course or two at NYU. Transferring internally to Elliott is a hassle, so I’m guessing it’s similar with an external transfer, too, due to so many GW-specific requirements (like IAFF 1005).

My main issue is that International Relations is an honors major so, although I believe that if I really work hard I’ll be able to get into the program (in which case NYU would be as good if not better than Elliott for IR), there is a strong probability of not being accepted into the program, in which case I would do something like economics instead. Also, the complete lack of a campus is getting to me (probably because I read too much CC)

Huh?

ESIA at GW is ranked better than NYU for international relations/studies. If you’re talking overall NYU vs GWU rankings, then… NYU wins. For IAFF, it’s GWU… hands down.

GWU and NYU campus’ are in many ways similar. City campuses, no “real” sense of campus (figuratively speaking, you kind of know when you’re own campus, but it’s by no means a traditional college campus). You’re walking to class with business people walking to work next to you.

The honors program is a waste.

Do you want economics or IAFF?

I don’t see the point in doing one semester at a college, then transferring, unless you truly hate the school once you get there. More schools means moving costs, making friends all over, getting re-adjusted to a new school, and transferring credits.

NYC is a fun city to attend college in.

DC (and ESIA) is the absolute best for studying international relations if you don’t mind forking over huge amounts of money to go there (unless you get into the higher-ranking Georgetown).

Why not go where you received the most financial aide?

NYU’s program is only better because of it’s selectivity. Only 25-30 people are accepted into the major each year (as Sophomore). For someone that is certain they will study international relations before making a college decision, GW is far and away the better choice.
Ideally, I would do both economics and international relations, because I enjoy both of them and they are similar fields.
Luckily, financial aid was not a factor in my college decision.
However, your analysis of the campuses did help alleviate some of my social concerns about NYU, so thank you for that.

I talked to someone in admissions and they said too many (read: more than expected) people accepted a place in GWs Elliot school this year so they aren’t even accepting internal transfers from, say, CCAS to Elliot, apparently. I’m not sure how that would affect you trying to transfer in later, I would assume it would make it nearly impossible because they wont even let INTERNALS in, which would obviously come before external transfers.

Also, what makes a school better because of selectivity? Seriously… This could mean the program is over-hyped or anything, not how good it is.

Is econ in Stern? If that’s what you want to do, then it would be silly to forgo Stern and its Wall Street connections, especially if internal transfers aren’t even being accepted to Elliott, as WMurphy said.

Does the honors program at NYU have access to better professors, more research, and an overall more difficult but rewarding atmosphere? If so, NYU may be your best bet, if you’re still in econ. There isn’t an Elliott-specific honors program at GWU, and Econ is truly hit or miss.

the fact that IR was an honors-only major at nyu was an issue for me as well when i was deciding between schools. i’d say if you’re really set on doing IR, give transferring a shot. however, it’s quite possible that you might end up wanting to change your major again, so think long and hard before pulling the trigger. and what murphy said is a bit concerning, but you don’t lose much by just doing the application and trying. elliott is definitely way better than nyu cas for IR. and GW has an urban campus similar to nyu, so not sure if that really makes a difference. GW is a bit more cohesive, as it owns pretty much all the buildings in a 5 block radius…but like gwgrad said, you’re walking to class alongside professionals. they’re both pretty similar schools overall, just different cities and different sizes
