Transfer Chances

I've been following this forum for a really long time but never actually thought I'd end up posting something on here because I was too scared. Y'all seem like a great bunch, so here goes...

I plan to apply for the spring 2008 term. I'm currently a college freshman at a state university. I'm also an Asian American male. Here's my stats.

SAT
Reading- 550
Math- 550
Writing- 590

ACT
Composite- 24

I know my numbers are terribly low. I've taken the SAT twice, and the ACT three times and those are my highest scores. I'm not really a good standardized test-taker.

GPA
3.975 unweighted
4.4159 weighted

Rank
16 out of 233
top 7%

Classes
all honors and dual enrollment; no AP because i always had a schedule conflict that kept me from taking one

Service
51 hours recorded--- I had much more from freshmen and sophomore year, but they never got logged in due to Hurricane Ivan directly hitting my city

Extracurriculars
Class president (4 years), first chair violin (4 years), NHS secretary, ASL treasurer, SGA parliamentarian, orchestra president, tennis, etc.

I have MANY extracurriculars and awards I can list on the application. I don't feel the need to list it all on here because you get the picture.

Current College Courses
Precalculus
Drawing I
Honors Literature
University Singers
Symphony Orchestra
Class Piano I
Applied Violin Lessons

I plan to major in architecture at Tulane and minor in music, hence the many music courses.

Current College Activities
Honors Council, Choir, String Orchestra

Excellent Recommendations
Excellent Essay

I intend to have at least a 3.5 or better this semester in college.

I'm not nearly worried about getting accepted as I am about how I'm going to pay for college. My biggest question is how much scholarship money do you think I can get with everything you see so far? My mother is a single parent and can't afford very much for my eduation because she also supports her family back home by sending thousands of dollars every month, so money is tight.

I don't mind doing work-study or taking out loans as long as it won't end up to be an outstanding debt. Also, since I'm applying as a transfer are they going to allow me to use scholarship money during the spring semester, or do I have to wait until fall 2008?

Thanks in advance!

In. no doubt about it. I had a 1680 SAT when i applied, but i brought it up to an 1860 for scholarships.

??? you had a 3.975 and you didnt get in your first time around???? ***? (sorry for the profanity but come on)

That is SHOCKING to me, I would have bet anything you would get in from highschool with a 3.9.........

You'll get in with a scholarship no problem! My college GPA was a 3.3 and I got $20,000 scholarship ($14,000 Founders, $6,000 combined need/merit aid) plus enough loans and workstudy to cover the rest. Hopefully you'll get a lot of Federal Aid too (it's a private school so it should be pretty generous...it was for me). Yeah, my HS was really good, but I transfered after 2 yrs so I don't think they looked at that much. Also, apply ASAP.
Be ready for a very demanding 4 yrs with architecture, though. My friend that's an architecture major is in the studio a lot of the weekend already and he's just a Freshman. The program seems really cool though--they go on field trips to the French Quarter to draw buildings a lot.

^^^^

why apply soon?

unless your planning on applying for the spring semester why would you apply soon, the deadline for transfer admission for fall semester is not until late some time in very early june.

Well, he'd finding out the entirety of his financial aid package sooner... It took me months after I got accepted until I found out my financial aid package. I didn't mean apply like right now, but prob early Jan (also file the FAFSA as early as possible).

don't count yourself in until you are..i know of some people with much better grades/scores that were rejected, let alone admitted with a scholarship

Anybody know what the biggest transfer scholarship Tulane offers is? My boyfriend is applying to transfer, so I was curious. He has a perfect SAT and 3.9ish at JMU.

I was admitted to Tulane about a month ago now, and I'm still patiently waiting for my financial aid and scholarship notifications to come in the mail. The deadline for transfers was yesterday, so I'd imagine they're gonna start assessing everyone in the spring transfer applicant pool now.

I don't doubt that I would've made it in directly after high school with my stats. Originally, I was planning to spend 2 years at my state school and then transfer. But unfortunately it doesn't work that way for architecture. In short, the sooner I transfer the better.

I am just worried about merit scholarships because my SAT scores are nowhere near their average range. And hopefully I can get a lot of federal money considering my mom is a single parent whose salary is the same amount as it costs to attend Tulane, haha.

The good feeling I get from Tulane is that almost any faculty member will give you individual attention. So I think they'll look at all of my circumstances as a whole and give me the best aid package that suits me.

biggest merit-based is about half, or 22,000. Forgot what the name of it is. Transfers aren't eligible (or weren't when I was admitted) for the full merit scholarships

actually when i visited the admissions office about 2 weeks ago, they said that most transfers are only eligible for up to $10,000 in merit scholarships. however, if they transferred earlier than say, 2 years, then the scholarship committee will look at you individually to give you a scholarship amount that best suits you.

i just got my scholarship letter yesterday and they're offering me $14,000 a year which isn't that bad considering i'm still a freshman transferring to Tulane for the spring semester. i was hoping for at least $16,000 in merit but i'll wait to get the rest of my financial aid package before i start panicking.

EbolaZaire and tayshodd2: when did y'all transfer to Tulane and how much money did you receive in merit? if you don't mind posting your stats, that'd be great because i wanna compare it with my own to see if what i got was reasonable

thanks!
