Transfer chances?

Hi W&M Admissions, I'm a current History major junior at Mary Washington. I would really love to try and transfer to W&M--I've always wanted to go there, but was not accepted out of high school (my high school GPA, although I was at a very good private school, was only about a 3.0). I have my heart set on William & Mary, and if you have any suggestions as to how to make myself a more appealing candidate, I would greatly appreciate it. Additionally, I was hoping you might have some idea of my chances for admission? Thank you so much!

Glad to hear you’re interested in transferring. Your courses and grades look strong and will make you competitive for transfer admission (we’re looking for a 3.5 GPA or higher and liberal arts courses both of which you have).

We admit about 50% of the transfers who apply but you are certainly a student who we would encourage to apply based on your academic credentials. Remember to send your mid-semester grades because your GPA is right at that 3.5 threshold so if we see continued good grades, especially in the tough courses you’re taking this semester, that will help. 3.5 is not a cut off but the most competitive applicants will have that GPA or higher.

Do take advantage of the place in the application that asks you about any interruption in your education to explain why you took a semester off. That is helpful to us.

Also, we do consider extracurricular activities, your essay, etc so answer the essay question (why you wish to transfer to W&M) and let us know how you’ve gotten involved in your 2 years at MWU. Also, in your essay explain why you wish to transfer a bit late in the process. W&M requires you to receive 60 credits from W&M to get a degree so most people transfer before their junior year. That’s not to say that we won’t admit you but explain in your essay that you understand this requirement and why you’ve decided to wait until midway through your junior year to transfer.

Hope this is helpful!
