Transfer Credit Cap? (4yr + CCC) Would love some clarification.

Hello!

I am hoping for some clarification on this topic. I am currently a CCC student of whom is aspiring for a successful transfer to a UC. A few years ago I left a(n out-of-state) 4 year public institution after completing (sort of) four semesters. Whilst enrolled I took a light and random smattering of lower division courses.

I have recently become aware of a maximum credit cap, as it pertains to the transferring into a UC as a Junior, which I may be (1) in very imminent danger of exceeding and (2) will inevitably exceed. Fortunately, given my penchant for taking odd courses during those lost years, several of the credits taken at my 4 year institution would not be UC transferrable (at least as far as I can tell by browsing ASSIST). Unfortunately, some of these courses would seem transferrable and were taken without rhyme or reason (i.e. intro to western civ + intro to american history taken back to back).

Moreover, in order to take the pre requisite coursework for my intended major (CS, hoping for Berkeley L&S), I would certainly accrue an excess of the max 70/80 total credits. While I was aware that I would have to report transcripts from all institutions attended, I was hoping I could elect to only transfer the credits taken at my CCC.

I’m running into some conflicting information on this subject. According to some links/excerpts provided, I would be fine as long as I transferred to a UC before reaching 60 credits at a 4 year (which I had not); further stating, all CCC courses taken in excess of the credit cap would not disqualify you during admissions. I have also come across people stating that I would be fine as long as the courses taken were not upper division (they were certainly not). At least, that is what my CC counselor stated. However, I’m somewhat skeptical.

Some clarification on this topic would be very much appreciated. I am obviously incredibly disheartened about this credit cap, as I really felt as though I had course corrected per the general direction of my life for the better. Any advice, as well, would additionally be much, much appreciated. Thank you.

Check page 34 on this link for an explanation of high unit transfers. Hope this helps: http://admission.universityofcalifornia.edu/counselors/files/quick-reference-2016.pdf

@2Bjetissoned As long as they are lower division, they will just get lumped in with CCC lower division and will cap at 70 semester units that transfer (with any overages giving you subject credit). There’s nothing to worry about. Take all the courses you need at CCC and breathe easy.

Thank you guys so much for your help! It seems I’m in the clear. I appreciate it.
