Transfer Credit Hours

Hi All,

I was accepted into American a few weeks back, but just recently received back my credits that will transfer over. They will only accept 20 of my hours, I will be finished with 36 hours by the end of the year, another option, Tulane will accept all 36. (Lowest a solid B) I’m an Elon student. Is there anyway to negotiate this? I am not committed, but it would really suck to lose 16 hours, basically a whole semester and over 20K down the drain.

Thanks!

Can I ask why you’re transferring from Elon? Have you visited American and/or Tulane? As a HS Senior, my S visited each school twice before making his decision (during his American overnight, both his roommates and another student he encountered wanted to transfer out). S chose Tulane over American. Although Tulane was by far the more expensive option, he felt like he fit in better with the student population at Tulane. So, based on our experience, I would not throw away $20K and a semester on American. Unless you are 100% certain that you want to pursue a career in politics or international relations. In that case, it’s a tougher decision. Hope that helps.

@ireneb‌ I disagree with the statement that you should only come to American if “you want to pursue a career in politics or international relations.” The majority of students are, in fact, students in CAS and not in SPA and SIS.

@CTransfer2017‌ I don’t think anyone can help you unless you contact Admissions. However, when I served in Student Government as a transfer advocate, I found that AU does have very strong criteria for accepting transfer credits from other institutions so it may not be negotiable. In my opinion, I’d agree with the above post and say that throwing away $20k might not be worth it.

@ireneb‌ I will PM you. Visiting both next week.
@bk4972b‌ That is quite interesting to hear. I have an email into AU admissions…I am quite surprised about the high standards, considering other schools at AU’s caliber are taking 28-36 of my hours. If I cannot get more hours, 20K is a lot of money to lose.

Update: It was an error. Elon’s transcripts did not show this semester…so the 20 hours are from last semester and J.term, so upon successful completion of these, I should be up to my full 36 hours.

@ctransfer2017 - my daughter chose American over Tulane, (not a transfer, entering as a freshman this fall) - money definitely helped her decide in AU’s favor but she is totally excited to be attending and had a great experience at the overnight at the school last month. BTW she is a psychology major. So definitely go to both school visits with an open mind and take what other people tell you with a grain of salt.
