Why did they do this? Does this help or hurt us?

It's probably to get more applications from certain target groups, such as community college students.

BTW, do you have a link to this? What is the new deadline?

march 15 > http://uvaapplication.blogspot.com/

funny thing? If you don't read the blog or wern't on here, you most likely wouldn't know because i'm pretty sure it isn't on the admissions website

An email went out to everyone in the system (we took out those who already sent an application).

We haven't started reading the transfer apps, by the way. No one is being hurt by the deadline extension.

Ah, explains why I didn't get an email =P any guess on how many applications came in this year for fall transfers?

No idea, Shoe. We're still focused on the regular admission process.

I'm just worried about increased competition with the deadline extended. Then again, it could be a good thing, I don't know. If you have no idea how many transfer apps you got, why would you extend the deadline?

I agreed with you at first, more time = more competition. Then I thought about it a bit. If you hadn't turned in the app by March 1, you likely wern't going to. Even so, I doubt someone could really crank out excellent essays and put time and effort and such into their app in less than two weeks time. My prediction is that less than 100 apps come in between March 1 and 15th. But that's my personal guess.
