transfer decision

I am currently a freshman at Binghamton University in the School of Management. I did very well last semester and made deans list. Unfortunately though, I am unhappy socially at this school. I am having trouble finding my niche and have tried a bunch of different clubs and nothing fits me well. I also don't love the cold weather and the fact that the school is in the middle of nowhere. I do not have many friends and I don't like to go out partying especially downtown which I feel is a hassle and unsafe.

I am considering transferring to the University of Delaware which also has a great business school but a more lively campus. I am just nervous about making the move and whether or not transferring is worth the extra money. I am also considering going to Hofstra because its closer to home so I wouldn't be homesick but the school is not up to the same caliber as either Binghamton or Delaware.

I am not sure what to do, whether to transfer or not and which of the 2 schools. I need some advice.

I’m just going to be blunt with you here; no one can you give you the advice you need on whether to transfer or not. If you truly dislike your current school and feel that it will impede on achieving your goals then by all means transfer.

You need to weigh the pro and cons of your current school vs EVERYTHING involved in the transfer process, namely: time, effort, and money. The number one reason for any college student should be to achieve their GOALS. Living unhappily for ~4 years certainly isn’t any fun but living unhappily for the rest of your life is much worse.

I did actually do a pros and cons list and I seem to have had the same amount of pros and cons for Delaware and Binghamton. What concerns me is whether transferring is more of a hassle than it seems in terms of adjusting to a new atmosphere, making new friends, and making sure the credits transfer properly. I am afraid of a rough transition although I am not really happy at my school now. I am not a big risk taker.

This is all dependent on how you value your time, effort, and money. Meshing with a new community can always be a challenge and it is just as much determined by your personality as it is by the community itself. I am unsure whether anyone here would be able to answer the questions you pose because it is all very subjective. Some students may transition very easily into a new community, others may not. Some may think the transfer process was effortless, for others it may have taken hundreds of hours of hard work including researching, visiting, and writing applications for their desired schools (I’m in the latter group). It all comes down to what you really want, no one can give you that answer.

Well I have already applied to each. I have heard back from Hofstra but have not heard yet from Delaware so mostly the hard work is done. I guess whatever I choose I guess it will work out in the long run, at least Im hoping so.

All I can say is make the most of whatever situation you end up in, go in with a good attitude, and remember that college is what you make of it.

Hope it all works out for you in the end.

Thanks a lot. I guess I’m just going to have to go with my gut on this and stick to a decision once and for all.
