so i'm planning to transfer to ucla but am currently enrolled at uci's business information management program. and i know pre business econ in itself is extremely difficult to get into, so would econ or mathematics/econ be similar in a sense and possibly easier to get into? thanks for any input. God bless.

How impacted the major you’re applying into does have an effect on admissions (i.e. makes it more competitive, the admissions committee would look for higher grades, etc). However, be aware that it may be difficult or even impossible to switch out of/into another major once you transfer.

quote from the bottom of the 2nd link:

Numbers following some of the majors refer to the following restrictions:
- Transfer applicants should note that demand for this major significantly exceeds space available at the transfer level.
- Applicants are admitted to pre-major status until prerequisites are satisfactorily completed.
- Transfer students who are admitted to a major outside the Department of Economics are not permitted to transfer into one of the economics majors.

Tough luck, it looks like the only way to be “economics” at ucla is to transfer directly into it. HOWEVER, if you want to be “mathematics econ” it looks like they don’t have those restrictions…(check the 2nd link).

Gauge how competitive you think you are. IMO, if you don’t want the risk, I would apply under a different major with the idea to transfer to “math economics”…you still have economics in the title and at least you have a better shot to actually get to UCLA than get rejected out right. (hope you’re good at math)

Call the department to verify that you can switch into math economics though in case the website is outdated.

good luck!
