transfer from 4 year, got in as freshman

I guess this is sort of a "chance me" thread, but mostly just a general question about transferring.

I was accepted into the UW last year as a freshman, but instead went elsewhere.
My first semester was rough with small bouts of depression, and my GPA is somewhat reflective of that (3.0). I'm doing much better second semester (might get A's in each class) but I'm not sure if they even look at that in the application. I've gotten pretty involved with campus stuff, and I'm in one of the most prestigious schools for my major in the country (Newhouse school at Syracuse University).

I guess my question is how likely it is I get in for Fall 2012. My college GPA isn't great, but I have gotten pretty involved, I've gotten A's in all classes related to my major, I have some other reasons that are more personal which give me good reason to want to go to UW. And lastly I was accepted last year as a freshman which I would hope counts for something.

I also have strong test scores (31 ACT) and what I like to believe strong essays (I say that because while my GPA improved greatly in high school, I still got into schools that were “reaches” according to my GPA)

anyone? 10 char

Hard to say. Here is what’s quite well known:

 1. UW doesn’t like transfers from 4-years, either in or out of state.
 2. Out-of-state pool is pretty competitive and you will have to compete with many people who might have better GPAs than you and better or similar ECs.

In the case of a transfer also a lot depends on your major. If it’s competitive - good luck. If it’s open or “minimum requirements” - you have a better chance.

I am from Washington, so would I still be considered out of state?

If you still have residence according to the criteria, then no. If your parents are here and you are their dependent, you are in state.

This isn’t related to your exact question, but if you get into UW, you should definitely apply for the Tau Sigma National Honor Society! You’ll qualify if you’re a transfer student (which you would be) who gets a 3.5 or higher in your first quarter at UW. Just something to consider if you take that route and get in.

As for your question, how many credits do you have? They won’t consider your ACT score unless you have less than 40 credits.

Either way, UW considers students using the holistic review process. This means that they will look at your entire profile, not just your grades. However, the fact that you did not do well as a Freshman there is likely to hurt you. If you can fit it into your personal statements, it might be good to explain what caused that (the depression) and that you are better at dealing with it now.

Overall, we can’t tell you whether or not you’ll get in. I suggest applying and seeing what happens. You won’t know if you don’t try. :)

What exactly is the Tau Sigma Honors society?

I definitely tried to explained best I could why I didn’t do very well first semester, and this semester I might get an A in each class, so I will be sending them my transcript later on again and hope that will help. (admissions told me I could send it if I wanted and if I thought it would help)
I believe I have less than 40, but I’m not 100% sure as its semester vs quarter. And my personal statement I believe is strong, and I have other reasons to go to UW, such as my dad’s health issues that make me want to be closer to home.

It’s just frustrating seeing as I got in last year, and I might not get in as a transfer, but I guess thats how it is.

And I have a fair amount of credits towards my major already, and in those classes I’ve done very well grade wise, if that helps
