University of Washington Freshman Transfer Chances?

Hey everyone,

I was posting because I was curious about my admission odds at the University of Washington. I accepted a spot at my state university but turns out they don’t have my major (whoops!) I am planning on applying to UWash because of their GREAT environmental science program and I really like the large college atmosphere.

In summary,

I have a 3.6 UW GPA, 30 ACT score, I was president of my high school’s science club and am a underrepresented minority (Native American.) I don’t know if that matters for anything at state colleges, however.

I read on the University of Washington website that admission for people transferring after freshman year is very competitive which gives me concern. The college I was accepted at has a lower acceptance rate though so I would assume (perhaps arrogantly?) that I have a pretty good shot at the University of Washington. Please let me know if you would consider this a safety, match or reach for me because I’ve heard reviews of it being both the “Public Ivy” and it being a not so hard to get into state school. Thanks for the help!

Please help guys!

Well maybe I’m not the most qualified person to answer because I’m only in high school, but UW is my dream school and I’ve spent a considerable amount of time (cough obsessively cough) reading their admissions website and forums related to the school.

What year are you in right now, and how many credits do you have? Your GPA seems okay, about average, but remember that out of state is much harder. I think the most important thing is showing why UW is right for you, and why you must go into the school right now. They place a huge emphasis on the essays. You have to show passion. Do you have any extra-curriculars from college, not from high school? Including those in your application would be a huge help.

I’d say as it stands now, it could go either way. And to answer your question, I think URM would help a little, since UW seems to place a huge emphasis on diversity and creating a campus that has many different types of people.

You are right that transferring after freshman year is very very difficult. UW gives a strong transfer admission priority to local community college students from Washington state. They actually have mandates to keep those transfer numbers really high, so it is super challenging to transfer in from another 4-year program and especially difficult to transfer in with only 1 year of college credits.
