I am currently a senior in high school and I got accepted into ASU, U of A, and NAU but my dream is to go to a UC school. recently I got rejected from UCI, UCR, UCSC, & UCM and since I’m trying to go to any of the UC schools I was wondering which is better or at least have a high chance of getting into UC school going to a California cc or attend ASU for two years then try transferring later?
A few questions.
What makes you so drawn to UC schools? A lot of people who are out of state have their sights set on UCLA and UC Berkeley as they’re the most prestigious, but you seem to have your sights on anything UC. There’s nothing wrong with that, but you do realize it’s like $60,000 per year for non-residents, right? Going to Berkeley in a top program is pretty hard to swallow at that price, let alone UCR or UCM.
What major? Some majors (for some schools) take little to no OOS students.
Are you even able to afford $60,000+ per year? Keep in mind that little, if any, financial aid is offered to OOS students admitted to UCs.
Honestly I’d reevaluate your plan all together, but if you REALLY want to get into any UC and you don’t care about cost, it would probably best to come to California and try to transfer from a community college here in CA.
Maybe you’ll find some discussion from this thread useful, as I’m seeing some similarities: http://talk.qa.collegeconfidential.com/university-california-general/1873832-is-full-out-of-state-tuition-for-ucs-worth-it.html
But again, I’d really evaluate your plan and asking where you why to go, why you want to go there, what you can afford, etc.
well I’m actually drawn to UC Berkeley ever since junior year but I just wanted to get into any of the UC schools until I’m able to transfer to either UCLA or Berkeley. I’m not exactly an OOS I’ve lived in California before I moved to Arizona and now I want to move back to California. I currently want to major in medicine but I’m still not sure about it. I have also discussed the tuition with my parents and they said they are okay with it. Even after attending a CC it would be two years so I would be considered an in state student so the cost wouldn’t be $60k.
Medicine?
Are you intending to go to Medical School? If so, you don’t need to attend UCB or UCLA to increase your chances. In fact, going to either school could hinder your chances. Also, you don’t need to major in anything related to medicine for medical school - you just need to do well in the med requirements.
I’m not too knowledgeable about what would make somebody an in-state vs. OOS student. Perhaps someone else could elaborate. I think if you completed a certain number of years in a CA high school, then you may be in-state, but I really don’t know.
